SELF PORTRAIT
Contour outline drawing
I outlined my photo and drew highlights and shadows on my face. It was a bit difficult to draw the highlights and shadows as I could not really see the shadows so I did not know where to draw. I also find that the highlights and shadows are a bit weird but overall, this activity was fun.
Contour outline blueprint
I placed a piece of carbon paper in between my photograph and a blank piece of paper. I had to be extra careful when outlining my photograph as the outline blueprint cannot be erased.
Completed face
I drew my facial features on a new piece of cardboard and cut them out. Next, I cut out my face on a new piece of cardboard and pasted the facial features on my face. Then, I added highlights and shadows by pasting brown and white paper on the cardboard. Lastly, I coloured my eye.
Hair frame and hair backing
I cut out the hair backing and the hair frame. I had to be more careful when making the hair frame as I need to ensure that it fits properly.
Cutting out hair pieces
I drew out the hair pieces on a piece of corrugated cardboard and cut them out
Completed hair
I pasted the hair pieces onto the hair frame. Originally, I wanted to have a longer hair but the hair pieces kept falling off when I tried to paste them. Hence, in the end, I shortened my hair. It turned out okay and my face looked better with the hair added to it.
Completed shirt - 1
As it was my first time doing the shirt, it was quite difficult. This shirt is made from a cup, hence it was a bit difficult to adjust the size of the cup to fit the cardboard. I was also not very sure about the steps hence it took me quite a while to do the shirt and I did not make a collar that was able to open.
Completed shirt - 2
With the experience from doing the first shirt, the process of making the second shirt was much smoother. This shirt is made from a coffee bag and a coffee sleeve, hence it was much more easier to let the size of the bag fit to the cardboard. I also included some elements from the coffee sleeve.
Final design - 1
I attached the different pieces together using velcro. I think I look like some Legoland staff.
Final design - 2
I attached the different pieces together using velcro. I think I look like a worker in a coffee shop.
Praise:
I am quite satisfied with my second shirt. Not only because the making process was quite smooth, but also because I like the design from the bag I got when I went to buy coffee. I feel that the main background design for the shirt is simple and clean and I quite like the colours. On top of the clean and simple background design, I added elements from the bag and the coffee sleeve, like the logo and name of the coffee shop and small cardboard pieces showing Marina Bay Sands and the Art Science Museum. I feel they added some colours to the main design of the shirt, allowing the shirt to not look boring.
Polish:
Firstly, I feel that the hair looks a bit dull and boring. I feel that I could add some pieces of coloured paper to the hair to add some colours to it and make it look more outstanding. I also feel that as my hair is solely made from a plain piece of corrugated cardboard and the face is also mainly made from cardboard, it made my head look very dull. Therefore, I feel that if I added some colours to the hair, it will make my artwork look a lot better.
Secondly, I do not really like my first shirt. I do not know why I decided to cover the neck with a white piece of paper after making the shirt, but when I was looking at my artwork after it was done, I feel that the white piece of paper made the artwork look a bit weird. I also feel that the colour and design of my first shirt does not really fit well with my head, because the shirt is very vibrant and colourful but the head looks very dull. Besides these, I also did not make the opening collar for the first shirt.
