Identified the highlights and shadows of my face and traced out facial features
This part was cool as we only had to trace out our face on top of a carbon paper and everything was imprinted onto the plain paper at the back of the carbon paper
I used carbon paper to trace out the shape of my head and shoulders, excluding the hair. My head was tilted to one side so I only had to trace out one ear
Traced out my facial features together with the highlights and shadows on my face. After tracing I cut it out
This part was quite frustrating to do as some features and details of the face ( like the small highlights at the corner of my mouth ) were so small and difficult to cut out. Sometimes I also coundn't figure out which part belonged to the left side and which part belonged to the right side
Today I finished cutting most of the details with some left, and glued them to my face. I didn't realize that I was supposed to separate the bottom half and top half of my lips, so in the end I had to peel it out, cut along the line drawn along my lips and paste them back. I felt like pasting the details onto my face was quite fun as i could see the product starting to come together and couldn't wait to see the final produt
Today, we used pieces of cardboard to style out hair according to the picture. In my picture I had long hair so I cut out a long and wide piece of cardboard, and then trimmed the cardboard according to the style of my hair. After trimming out the outline of my hair, I used small pieces of bumpy cardboard to stick it onto the outline, giving the hair ore texture. Also to make me look like I have more hair :)
Ms Ng told us to make a hair backing and paste velcro onto it so that at any time we wanted to change our hairstyles. we can easily remove the hair the hair we designed, design a new hairstyle and paste it onto the hair frame. This allows us to let us know what we look like with different hairstyles, without having to go to the hairdressers and cut our hair
Finally, I designed a shirt. To make the shirt, I used cardboard from a cereal box. I love to eat so 90% of the cardboard I used is based on food. I wanted to be able to make multiple shirt designs, but I forgot to paste velcro onto the cardboard first before pasting my shirt onto the cardboard. I think one thing I can improve on would be the deign of the shirt. I would want it to be more organized and maybe I can even add some small accessories.
To make the portrait be able to stand, Ms Ng told us to make a stand for it. We just needed to take a piece of cardboard sturdy enough and cut out a strip wide enough to support the portrait
Praise: For someone who doesn't have an artistic side, I feel like I did quite well in this art project. I like the hairstyle that I designed as it has a lot of texture and dimension to it. Through this art lesson, I learnt how to identify the shadows and highlights on my face. I found this art lesson quite fun and interesting as we could design a self-portrait from scratch from cutting out the head shape to pasting all the details together. Being able to see all the details come together to form my first self-portrait was quite interesting to me.
Polish: If I could redo my artwork, I would firstly work on the proportion of my face to my shoulders. I feel like my shoulders are slightly too narrow, which makes the balance slighty off. Another thing I would work on would be shirt. I would make it more organized and add small accessories to the shirt to make it look more vibrant.
