using my portrait, i outlined different parts of my face (reflections, shadows on face etc.)
after using carbon paper to trace the contour out on a different piece of paper, this is the blueprint im using for the rest of the portrait.
this is after i trace my portrait using carbon paper again and cutting my face shape out on cardboard.
i cut out small pieces of my face (eyes, cheeks, lips, etc) and added in the highlights and shadows using different coloured cardboard to give it more tone and depth.
i started on my hair by pasting the headboard before doing the actual hair. on the headboard, i pasted a piece of velcro so that i can take my hairstyle out whenever i want.
done with the hair! i used corrugated board to cut out the bits and pieces of my hair and even gave myself more bangs (although in real life i don't have bangs) and stuck it on the headboard. at this point of time, it looks a little more like me :)
next, i started on my shirt. i like eating ice cream, so i used the cardboard box from my ice cream to make my shirt. i used the black and white elements of the box and even cut out the smaller details such as the cookies and ice cream to make it more interesting. i also added a side pocket.
i put my face and my shirt together and its almost done!
i used a piece of long carboard and used masking tape to stick it. now it can stand and i can admire my beautiful face at a better angle ><
Praise:
i think that this experience was overall a very interesting one for me as i really got to appreciate my own face as throughout the process, i had to keep looking at my reference photograph to be able to figure out which parts to cut or which parts to stick etc. i realised that every feature of my face is important as everyone is unique and if one part of my face is missing, i will not look like myself. While cutting each part of the face for example the contour and the shadows or lighting on my face, it gives my face more depth and makes it look more realistic. I think i am proud of myself for being able to cut out the cardboard and paper, as i have always been very bad at cutting since primary school, but i have reached my goal and im glad that it actually reflects my real face! I also learnt to be patient throughout this process as each piece is intricate and delicate. The making of the shirt was also very fun, as the choice of cardboard reflected the things that i like such as the ice cream and black and white colours. I also like how through this project i can see how much i have changed from the start of semester 2 up till now ( i’m a bit skinnier now), which leads me to feel more confident of my own insecurities. Given another chance, i would definitely do it again as this was a really enlightening process which allowed me to learn a bit more about myself, and i can express my creativity through the hairstyles and the clothes and be myself.
Polish:
although as mentioned earlier, i am proud of myself for being able to cut the pieces of cardboard and paper to stick on the face to give it more depth, but i still think i could have done better by being more patient and more delicate with the small bits and pieces as in the end, it still looked quite messy and uneven at some parts. I also think i could have been neater with handling all the different things on my table as on my face, you can see the black stains from the carbon paper and pencil marks. I also think my spectacles could be more accurate as people tend to recognise me based on my spectacles, so the shape could have reflected the ones i am wearing right now even better. I think i should improve on my patience and cleanliness, and be more mindful of my surroundings next time, even outside of art class.
