I traced out the lightings and shadows of my picture. I also traced out my features such as my nosetrils, my eyes, eyebrows etc.
I placed carbon paper on a white piece of paper, and the picture of the contour outline on the carbon paper. I made sure the picture of the contour outline was in contact with the grey part of the carbon paper. After placing the papers together, I traced the contour outline out again on the picture, printing the contour outline on the white piece of paper.
I traced the head shape out on the carboard and I cut out the shoulders and head. I then proceeded to cut the head shape out from the white piece of paper with my contour outline printed on it. I then traced it out onto the cardboard using carbon paper like I did on Lesson 1.
I traced out my features and highlights by placing the carbon paper on top of the cardboard. I then cut the highlights out from white/ beige paper and stuck them onto the cardboard base with the white glue. I also cut out the shadows, lips, eyebrows, eyeballs etc. from brown cardboard and pasted them onto the cardboard base. Ms Ng also helped me to cut out my spectacles for my cardboard face.
I traced out the outline of my head onto the cardboard and cut out a thick U- shaped cardboard. I also cut another piece of slightly thinner cardboard as the fringe. I then trimmed the fringe and made sure it was able to come on and off my head easily.
With reference to my picture, I cut out shapes from the cardboard like zig-zag patterns as my fringe. I also tried to do some layering of hairstrands on the hair base so the hair would have more volume. I cut out small hair strands and pasted them onto my hair, along with long hair entensions onto the fringe base. Lastly, I got a velcro from my teacher and pasted it onto U-shaped cardboard, such that the hair is detachable from the head like a wig.
I gathered lots of different cardboards with different colours and i cut them out into shapes depending on my shirt design. After cutting them out, I pasted them onto the body base.
After doing some more touchups on the shirt, I added velcro to the back of my head to the body, attaching the head onto the body.
I used a piece of long cardboard provided by the teacher to place it at the back of my work, attaching it with masking tape. After that, I tried to make sure that the stand was positioned correctly such that the portrait was standing upright and steady. If it was not standing propoerly, I will fix it until I am satisfied with it.
Praise
I think that I was able to cut out the highlights well and contour. I also tried to layer them so that the face would have more depth and detail instead of looking flat. I was especially proud in tracing out the spectacles as it was hard to trace it on the rocky cardboard. Nevertheless, I still managed to draw smooth and nice lines. The spectacle was also not traced too thin or too thick, thus I was very happy. I was also proud of my hair cutouts. It may seem messy, but I tried to make the fringe as realistic to my picture and it was hard to cut out each individual strand of hair. It was even better as I did not need the use of carbon paper and just drew it out based on approximation. In the end, the fringe was still was big enough to cover my big forehead!
Polish
I felt that I should have made the hair seem neater as I look very messy. During the process of making this artpiece, I faced many challenges. One of which is the cutting and pasting of highlights and contour. Initially, I was not able to choose the correct shade of cardboard for the contour or highlights. I also was not able to identify that much shadows and highlights. This resulted in my face looking dull and flat. Feeling unsatisfied, I redid the face, carefully pulling out each highlight and contour from the face, and replacing them with new cardboard with a different shade. I also adjusted a bit and tried adding more highlights and contour into the reference picture, cutting out more features and layering them onto the face, giving the face more depth and more realism. This was not the only challenge for me, as I also struggled with time and catching up with the class. I messed up lots of times during the process and had to redo. This took away lots of time and I was quite behind the class. Thankfully, I was able to catch up quickly thanks to the help of my teacher and classmates.
