In today's lesson we outlined our pictures and tried to draw I tried to add more shapes at the top of my head so that there would be more shapes. I also tried to detail the hair on my shoulder and realised that I overdid it.
In the lesson, we were outlining our picture over carbon paper. There was another blank paper under the carbon paper and thus we have the following result. after i was done outlining i realised that I did it too light, thus i had to retrace it all over.
In this lesson, we were tasked to trace our face on cardboard. because there was nothing to hold the paper still, it was much harder to draw the lines without it becoming jaggered. I also struggled to copy the smaller details on the side of the cardboard as i was trying to save space but i keep over overlapping the drawings.
In this lesson, I had cut out the face pieces from the cardboard i had marked out the previous lesson. Cutting out the head was the hardest due to it curves while the lips was the easiest. For the glasses, i snipped a little bit of it near the edge to cut out the inside of the circle. i fixed up the cut by stacking a few small pieces of cardboard, and glued it behind the plasses.
In this photo, i had coloured in my pupils with permanent marker and cut up very tiny pieces of white cardboard to stick on to my pupils to give it a shine and make my face look more lively.
I had also cut out an out line of my hair, up to my ear, and glued it behind my head. This would act as a hair frame where the hair that i made would rest on. It was quite easy to outline my hair but very difficult to cut the inner curve of this hair frame.
In this lesson, With my first attempt at making my hair, I had used some bumpy paper make my hair near my forehead. I had decided to use this material is to resemble my slightly wavy hair. I had also designed my hair in a way such that it would look much more tidy and proper, which was not what I was looking for, though it is a nice feature as i would be in a more formal setting. This made my hair looked slicked back, which was not a bad idea, but it made certain features on my face larger.
Due to my first attempt being not the best look, i felt confident that i could solve the problem, thus I attempted to make another hair piece. This time I had made my hair into bigger chunks, which made it look more free and flowy, While making my face look a little more normal. I personally think that this was a good attempt at trying to fix the problem, but when i put it on the face i had made, I did not see that big of a change. Though there was good benefits of thsi decision.
In the previous lesson, i had completed my head so i would be moving onto , to assembling different parts of of my pieces together. In this photo, I had gotten some velcro straps and pasted one on the head frame and the other on the back of my hair. This way, if were to make a new hair style, i can detach the one i currently have and attach my new hair design.
Next, i cut out my body frame where all my pieces would be attached to. I also cut out a lage rectangular shape of cardboard so could add many layers of hair on it. I used two different types of carboard which are two different shades of brown. This is to deduce the shadow in the hair, which are in the front which the others in the back. After i had finished assembling, i glued on a squarish piece of carboard to the remaining back part of the "hair strands" so that i could attach it to the velcro strips. I think that I could have made the cardboard that has the velcro straps and the piece with the hair, one piece so it would not be so bulky.
In this lesson, I had made my oufit for my model. I had decided to make formal outfit, made out of a collared shirt and suit, made out of a cereal box. There were different shades on the box, so i used that to differentiate my outfit, with the darkest part being the suit. Once I finished with the outfit, I did the last step and added the velcro strap to the body frame, such that i can attach my face to it.
This is the final product That i have made. although
Praise and polish
Praise - I was wondering about how i could make my glasses, and how i could cut the inner circle, where the lenses are, without making a big seam in the cardboard. I am proud that I was able to think an idea, where i make a small cut near the edge of the glasses to remove the inner carboard, than fixing the cut by glueing very small pieces of cardboard behind that cut. In addition, by gluing the small pieces of card board, it makes the glasses look more stable on my face, and not bending the cardboard of the glasses frame.
Polish -although i have a lot of imperfections in my portrait, I think one thing i can improve is the head and hair design coordination. This is because the head frame is quite big, thus when i attached my finished hair, My forehead would looked more enormous than the picture, which was not something i wanted to portray. additionally, this made the potrait look much different from what i look like. If i were given another chance, I would have cut down on the space of my forehead when cutting my face shape in photo 3, as my hair would be also covering parts of my forehead, hence it would not be needed for me to have the full forehead. If not, i would have also tried to used different material for my hair, like paper, as it is more flexible and i would be able to do more shapes such that it would cover the forehead more.
