Today, we outlined our portrait, identified and defined the different lightings and shadows on our face. It wasn't hard identifying the darker shades, however it did take some time to outline the lighter bits because it was in black and white.
Using carbon paper, we traced out the outline of our facial features onto a blank piece of paper so that its clearer for us to use as reference for later steps. This step was quite confusing as I didn't know whether I have traced certain parts before and have to constantly lift the picture up to check. However, the carbon paper did help to transfer quite smoothly with not much strength needed
Tracing the outline onto the cardboard was rather easy as it was similar to the previous step. However, cutting it out was quite troublesome, like cutting the curves near the neck, I had to make sure I didn't bend the cardboard to prevent the neck from snapping in half, similar issue was faced near the inner curves of the ears. But through time and effort, I got the hang of it.
While outlining each feature, it was a bit difficult as I wanted to conserve as much cardboard as possible but at the same time didnt know whether what i was tracing on top of the carbon paper was gonna overlap of go off the remaining cardboard.
I had to determine what cardboard to use for ccertain shadows and highlights by carefully analysing the picture
Today, I finally finished pasting and layering all the contour. I think overall it looks quite decent, however I couldn't cut out the outlines exactly, that's why on some feature, there is still bits and pieces of the black carbon outline. I wasn't careful enough with the glue, thus also resulting so some faint glue stains in certain places.
Today, I finished cutting and pasting all the hair strands to form my first hairstyle. Some strands kept falling out but with the correct layering and positioning, it came out pretty well.
While brainstorming different shirt designs, I was in a dilemma on which design I should go with, but I decided to settle with this checkered design with a cute mascot in front. I made the checkered design by constantly overlapping different cardboard stripes, the cardboard was the perfect softness thus it was quite easy to intersect
After finishing the designs, to combine everything together so that it stays, we used velcro to make sure it stays in place and does not disassemble into seperate pieces
After finishing all the work, I pasted the stand behind my head so that it stands
Here is my final product!!!
PRAISE - After 2 long terms, I am finally finished with my self portrait. I am honestly quite satisfied with my work as I think it looks quite similar to my reference picture. Through these lessons, I've learnt some basic layering of lights and how to layer paper to give off different effects as seen in my artwork. Despite not being able to tell the differences in light contrast at first, I still think that the end product looks ideal!!
POLISH - I really wanted to make more than one design of hair and shirt design however, unfortunately we did not have the time due to the many lessons missed :(( I'm also not that satisfied with the hair style I went with as it looks rather messy than what I imagined, I could have been more creative with it instead of just copying the one in the printed picture.
