today we traced out our by lining our hair, head, eyes, mouth etc. the hardest part was trying to find the lighter and darker areas of our faces and tracing it out to later be layered with the cardboard. as the pencil was a little blunt, it also made my lines quite thick but i'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. i am pretty satisfied with this!
we then traced out the photo onto drawing paper with a piece of carbon paper in between. this will be the blueprint for the cardboard version of my head. this was pretty easy because i already knew what to draw. however, i dont know what to think of this drawing. it looks funny.
next, i had to trace the different parts onto the cardboard provided, which was then cut out. this step was particularly time-consuming and was pretty tiring too as it was difficult to manoeuvre the scissors around with the stiff cardboard, especially when cutting the smaller parts. i also took some time to decide which shade of cardboard i would use for the different parts.
after tracing and cutting out the various parts like the highlights and shadows, i had to carefully paint some glue to the backs of the cut out parts and stick it onto the face. this part was relatively easy, though i lost a few parts and had to redo them. i also traced and cut out the headpiece, which would later be used for the hair.
today was my very first attempt at creating bangs using corrugated cardboard. as someone with little experience with bangs, i was not very sure on the placement and shape/length of the pieces. as i was told to "layer the hair pieces", that is what i did and i definitely pictured it differently in my head.
after the bangs, i worked on the clothing. i took some inspiration from an actual piece of clothing i found to be quite unique and tried to replicate it. after much experimentation, i figured i could fold the outer layer like an accordion to create some texture (?) and make it stand out from other pieces. the paper i used was from a paper bag which had a pretty nice design.
after another failed (and admittedly similar-looking) bangs, i had some help from ms ng who helped me trace out a new set of bangs on yellow card paper which would be less stiff. it would also make me blonde, which with the shape of the bangs, makes me look like elsa. i quite like it though, especially the little curls made by twirling the edge of the paper with a pencil. i later attached a strip of wavy hair to the back of the head to make it look like a really thin ponytail. i planned on adding more strands but then decided it looked quite nice.
today i worked on another set of clothes. i took inspiration from some images online, and it was supposed to be a cardigan on top of a shirt. however, i made the mistake of gluing the cardigan part on the cardboard first, thinking i could glue the shirt part on later. after many failed attempts of trying to cut the shirt in the right shape to fit the neckline of the cardigan, i gave up and used strings to form the shape. i'm not very proud of it (not at all) but i shall have to make do with what i have.
i used the velco strips to attach the face, hair frame and braid to the main cardboard body. this way, i can remove or swap any of the things. i also added a stand so that it can be propped up for display/
PRAISE: i am honestly pretty proud of my artwork (at least of the hair and the green shirt) because as someone who is slightly lacking in the visual art sector, i think i did pretty well. firstly, i think the way that i learnt to curl the hair with the pencil is pretty cool and that it makes the hair stand out more, especially with the extra curl near the ear. i also didn't expect the braid to look that good after cutting it out. as for the clothes, i really like how i folded the outer layer to resemble a ruched shirt. lastly, i quite like how the different shades of cardboard make the different facial features pop, especially the layering on the eyes.
POLISH: however, i feel like i could have improved on the overall worksmanship. some cuts were a little jagged/wonky, and there are glue and pencil marks here and there. the second shirt was also pretty disappointing due to the mistake i mentioned above. i also feel like the face doesn't resemble me, but it also could be due to the photo reference i used because the photo doesn't resemble me much either. nevertheless, i am satisfied with my artwork!
