MY SELF POTRAIT
this is a photo of me that my friend took for our first art lesson. we spent 30min of the lesson finding a good spot to take a picture and getting a friend to help me take the picture. in the end, i chose to use this picture. in the next lesson, i will outline my face and do some contouring for myself.
this is a picture of me. for the second lesson, i outlined my face, hair, shoulders, eyes, ears, mouth, nose etc. i also drew shapes on my face, to show the different shadows and lights hitting my face, the dark parts and the light parts. i spent the whole art lesson drawing this.
this is the final outline and contour. for our third lesson, we finished up out outlines and printed it onto a separate piece of paper with carbon paper. the carbon paper was placed in between the papers, and then we taped it to secure the photo such that the original photo will not move around and make it hard to outline. the carbon ink was also really hard to erase. i spent quite a lot of time outlining everything. this will be the blueprint that i will be referring to for the remaining lessons and cutting of cardboard.
for this lesson, i cut out the blueprint of my face to trace the facial features onto cardboard. i also traced a backing face onto the cardboard. i will cut them out and paste it in the next lesson. it was a tedious process of figuring out the different facial feature and labelling it, along with ensuring that every detail and feature was labelled and drawn. i spent the whole lesson working on this.
for this lesson, i cut out the cardboard face backing, the outlined facial features and shadows + highlights and pasted them together! the cardboard was really tough to cut, especially without the help of the pen knife anymore. the spectacles look like sunglasses if i put them onto the face. i will adjust the spectacles and paste them onto the face during the next lesson. it was pretty fun and weirdly satisfying to see the different features fitting together perfectly to form my face.
for this lesson, i cut out a hair and hairband and pasted it onto the face. i also cut out some little hair strips with the corrogated cardboard to give the hair some texture, it isn't completed and i will complete it in the next lesson! today's lesson was pretty tiring but nice to start to see everything come together slowly. for the next lesson, i plan to finish the shirt and hair! :D
i did up my hair for this lesson, giving it some interesting texture. it took me quite a while to get here, and i got some inspiration from online images and other classmates. i cut out some strips, then i tore the smooth flimsy part out, and pasted it on the hair frame. then firmer less flimsy half of the cardboard was curled and pasted on top of the hair frame. since i had some extra time, i also did up the shirt with a nice pocky design (that makes it look like a floral shirt) and a qr code that i took from a friend. although the final look makes it look like i'm some old aunty wearing a floral shirt. im slightly unsatisfied with this hairstyle, because it doesn't really fit me, so i might change it again the next lesson! i'll also cut up the spectacles for the next lesson.
draft 2: i did up another version of my hair. i think it looks more like me and looks way better. this time, i cut up little blobs of the corrugated cardboard, then pasted it on. i separated some of the cardboard near the fringe and cut it up with little spikes to make it look like a normal fringe. i curled the ends of the cut up part a little bit, but the curlings seems to be coming back down. i'm still trying to figure out a way to keep the hair curled upwards. the face also looks more proportionate with the new hair. the old hair seems really messy compared to the new hair. the pocky shirt still gives floral aunty, but it doesn't give old floral aunty. ms ng also helped me to cut the spectacle frame and i pasted it onto the nose bridge. i think it's a success for now, and i might add additional designs for the next lesson. maybe another hair frame 2.1?
for draft 3, i had a first version of my hair, but it didn't looke nice so i tore it up and did another version. the version in this photograph is the 3.1 version, which i did after finishing the previous version. this is my emo hair style.
for this lesson, i also added a crown. it was a random idea i got from seeing a friend's scrap piece of cardboard. she had finished her piece, and i asked to use her scrap cardboard, which was golden and shaped similar to the crown. after a few refinements, i made it look good and functional: sticking it to my my forehead. the velcro was stuck to the shirt backing and the face. this is to stop the face from slipping from the backing so often and easily. i also pasted velcro with the help of ms ng on the hair and the face, to prevent the hair from slipping from the face so often and easily.
i found more qr codes from nearby tablemates and pasted it onto the shirt. so, whenever someone tries to take a picture, their camera wld help them scan their qr codes. it was a funny touch and it would attract more attention and make the shirt really unique. i found some scrap cardboard from a friend who had finished their work, so i took it and added it as a collar for myself.
there is a cardboard stand at the back which i pasted on. this is to help the face itself stand up straight, allowing people to easier see the product itself.
this is the final product with the first hairstle: the normal hairstyle
this is the final product with the second hairstyle: the emo hairstyle
praise: i think the accessories, eg the crown, specacles, qr code and shirt design was nice. i think it was a good creation and it really fits well. i also really liked the different hair designs i had and im happy with the way the product turned out.
polish: i think that maybe the hair board could be better made such that it fit better with the face. i also feel if i had more time and cardboard, i would make a second shirt, which is more formal or that is less messy, more sophisticated. then i could change between two different shirt boards. i could also better cut out my features and the shadows. i didn't get the chance to take a photo of the whole product upright on the table, so if i had that chance it would be better.
