SELF PORTRAIT
Contour outline of my self portrait
Today, we traced the contour drawing of our self portrait based on the outline of the lightings and shadows. Everyone have different contour.
Blueprint of my contour drawing
We traced our contour drawing/outline on a drawing paper using carbon paper. I found it easy and efficient to trace the exact same outline on a new piece!
Traced Portrait Features- Faciography
We have to traced out our face feature on a piece of cardboard today, the process might be a little hard and confusing, so I have to label each face feature to prevent confusion when cutting them
Completed face assmebling
Today we have to assemble our cut out face features. I thought it was easy to cut out the features from the cardboard, but turns out it is quite hard to cut using a scissors. The product came out a bit weird as the eyes were too small too cut exactly the same shape, if i have more time, I hope I could have more patience in cutting the eyes so it would look more alike.
Hair backing and hair frame
Today, we used a piece of cardboard to cut out the hair backing and hair frame(not shown in the picture
Making hairstyle
After making the hair frame, I started designing the hairstyle using corrugated cardboard. I learnt that we should add layering to the hairstyle and curve the corrugated cardboard so it will look more natural and more realistic.
Overall look of hair on face
After putting the hairstyle on the hair backing, the teacher-Ms Ng, also gave an idea on putting velcro to stick the hair and face together (velcro on the hair backing and hair frame). Overall, I was quite happy with the hairstyle because it actually looks like my actual hairstyle. However, the only thing I'm a bit disappointed is how big my face look with few amount of hair on the picture. If I have more time, I hope I can put more layering on the hair.
Final overall look of hair on face
Today, I have a bit more time in class, so I managed to add some colours and layering on the hair. I added a darker tone of brown because I really like my hair to be brown!
Shirt design
I happened to come across a cheongsam design and my cardboard pattern looked like that design of cheongsam, so I made a cheongsam using my cardboard. I was surprised that it actually turned out quite well! :)
Details on the shirt
I cut out the flower patterns on the cardboard I have and pasted on the shirt I made. I added details like lines so it looked more like a cheongsam, I'm quite satisfied with the detail!
Second shirt design
I decided to add another colourful outfit design for the cardboard portrait. I decided to add a more colourful design and less casual. I made use of the cardboard from cococrunch and pretz.
Details on the shirt
I added folds on the clothes to add pattern and texture on the clothes so it will look more 3D. Overall, I'm quite satisfied how the shirts I made look!
Attaching velcros
Lastly, I added velcro on the head and hair. It is removable so I could add another head/hair when needed! It would not fall off easily too, it is a very useful and helpful material to stick things together!
Attaching velcros on the back of the body
I attached velcros at the back of the body to stick the shirt with the body. I also added a stand so that the portrait can stand on its own.
Final look
This is the final look!
PRAISE & POLISH!
Praise:
I'm really pleased with how my portrait relief turned out. It was quite challenging, but the effort was worthwhile. My goal was to make the portrait look as realistic as possible, and I'm proud of the result. Exploring the interplay of light and shadow during this creative journey was a particularly enjoyable aspect of the process. I am quite proud of my artwork for the hair as it shows big similarity with my current hairstyle. Although there are a lot more things and details that can be improved, I am still very satisfied with the overall result.
Polish:
Firstly, the face did not really show resemblance to my face in real life because I did not cut out my face shape accurately enough. What I can do in the future is that I can trace my face shape properly. Secondly, I felt that the second shirt could be further improved as it does not look as creative and fancy enough. Lastly, if I have more time I hope I can add a bit more colours to the hair. One of the colours I wanted to add was blonde as I am curious how would I look with blonde. In conclusion, I think that I should ask for feedback from my peers and teachers in order to produce a better artwork!
