We learnt how to contour our face, not only the main parts(eyes, nose, mouth, brows) we also had to find and contour our shadows and highlights. It was quite challenging for me to trace out the shadows and highlights as it was not very visible to me.
We then used carbon paper to transfer the blueprint onto a blank paper. It was very interesting to try using carbon paper for the first time, but I kept on worrying that i would accidentally trace wronly.
After tracing, and cutting out each and every feature off the cardboard, I had to piece and glue them onto the head. It felt like a puzzle when i was trying to piece out the face together. I also tried to split some parts in half, to make the features seem less puffy and bulky.
When I made a hairstyle, I tried to get creative and design a hairstyle that's quite different than mine.I then tried to spli the hair into different parts, so that later on I could give them different colours. I used wavy cardboard as I found it to be more hair-like than plain cardboard. However, after the i finished that, I found that the hairstyle was too plain. So i decided to add a vibrant colour to it, which is baby blue. I found the hairstyle more unique after adding the blue.
This is my final shirt design! Im very very proud of it. I chose the jersey design as it is my current favourite fashion item. I also personalised it by adding my favourite number--19, and my initials onto the jersey. I decided to match the colours baby blue and black, as it is very aesthetic, and it also matches with the hair.
Lastly, I added a cardboard piece on the back so that it could stand. I personally love the matching hair and shirt colours.
I think one thing that i did well was focusing on some small details of the portrait, For example, i added latex glue onto the eyeballs to make it more shiny and lifelike. I think one thing that differs my portrait from others is the facial features. Upon seeing others facial features, I felt that the thick cardboard was too bulky, and made the whole face seem puffy. Thus I decided to split most of my features into half to make it thinner. I also added eyeliner to the eyes as to make the eyes stand out more.
I feel that I couldve done better with the hair. Although I have made a lot of changes, and it looks a lot better compared to first draft, I feel like there could be still something more special done to the hair to make it stand out more. One example could be curls, as right now the hair looks pretty flat, so adding curls would add a lot of fun to the hair. I feel that if I had more time I couldve done another shirt design thats funkier than the one i have.
Overall, I found this to be a really fruitful experience. Not only did I learn more about my face, I also had a lot of fun cutting, and pasting, and adding colours to the portrait. I will treasure both this experience and also my portrait, as it is my one and only portrait.
Im very happy. Yay!
