Outline of portrait
we had to outline the feature of the face and identify the highlights and shadows of our faces for contour so that the cardboard artwork after will be easier for pasting of pop-up contours and highlights.
Tracing
we had to trace the features and contour/highlight lines onto a piece of paper using the carbon paper .
Cutting our base
i traced out my face and neck shape onto a cardboard using the carbon paper and then trace out our entire face with features and cut it out seperately for the next step of pop-up contoured and highlighted features.
Adding of contour and highlights
we first cut out pieces of our face features, then paste in on our faces to emphasise on the brighter and shadowy parts . to further display the highlights and contour, i chose different colours of paper, some lighter and some darker to represent them.
Adding of backing
we added the backing so that we could use it as a base for our hair and can just change different styles of hair if we want to .
Making of hair
we cut out the shape of our hair and then cut out some jagged shaped, uneven pieces of cardboard to show the volume and texture of our hair
Creating the shirt (first design)
the first design i had was a plain white shirt with a simple black lined collar with a puma logo and website link, however after Ms Ng's advices, i realised it was not vibrant enough decided to improvise my shirt and add on more designs to it.
Finding of materials
Ms Ng provided us some cardboard that are packaging of commonly used items and i also prepared some of my own cardboard for the preparation of my 2nd design of my shirt.
2nd design of my shirt
for my second design i tried to be as creative as possible and hers what i added to my shirt: two types of cats, cut out shiny words that float around or make a phrase, pictures of different items such as a rabbit, flowers and shoes, cute blue and silver shiny logo and most importantly, a 3D pop out collar of the colours blue and silvery grey to match the colour themes.
Glasses
i made my glasses floating on my face and pasted it to my nose bridge instead after Ms Ng's suggestion so it will look 3D and not too flat on my face. i also coloured my glasses black to better recreate my actual glasses so it would look most realistic .
Velcro pasting
velcro pasting was mentioned in the process and i was glad that Ms Ng told us to do this because it will allow me to change my hair and face expressions when i wanted to and was not just stuck to only one kind. example i wanted a face with angry expressions, i could just change them by removing the velcro and pasting another one on.
Here is my final product !!
everything came out well with the teacher's instructions and my creativity. the hair and face looked realistic and the shirt was very vibrant after redesigning !! im glad the teacher and i made good choices which is why this art piece came out very nicely. THANK YOU !!
REFLECTION
PRAISE : i was very surprised when the glasses that i colored black made my whole art work stand out even more and look much more realistic. i thought that my final art work looked quite similar to the actual me, which is something i am proud of because i put in a lot of effort and tried my best to replicate the realistic image of myself. at first, i thought that making the design of the shirt was difficult because i did not know how to creatively combined the different elements from different commercial cardboard and failed once because my design was too simple-black and white only. however, i continued to persevere and tried to find more elements to add on more colorful elements to my shirt to make it look more vibrant.
POLISH : if given another chance, i hope i can explore and try a new color and hairstyle. my current hairstyle is just done by cutting different shapes and sizes of plain cardboard and making the hair so it would have volume. however, this hairstyle does not have any kind of color and hairstyle. thus, if possible, i would want to try out a new kind of hairstyle such hair highlights- brown hair with light pink highlights with perms. despite all this changes that i hope i can do, i am still very satisfied with my current art piece !!
