Stage 1.Topographic lines superimposed on the photo
Stage 2: Topographic Blueprint of my face
Stage 3: Cardboard "Backbone"
This is the first draft of drawing topographic lines on my self-portrait. I feel like I could have done better when taking the photo as it was hard to differentiate the amount of light shining on each area and that resulted in some really weird shapes. Overall I am quite pleased with this result as I feel that it somewhat resembles the actual topography of my face.
After tracing it out on paper, I feel generally amazed and contented how the result closely resembles my actual face. I feel that I could have done better in terms of tracing out the shapes as some of them look different from the first draft, but overall I am quite happy with this result.
At this stage, I am happy that the design is being smoothly translated from one draft to another and the result is getting closer and closer to fruition. I feel that I could have done better in cutting out the cardboard as the shape of the cardboard looks a bit irregular. Overall, I am happy that it has come this far without much trouble.
Stage 4: Halfway through 3D model
At this point the entire gist of the topographic face is starting to get more obvious, and I feel quite pleased with the process as the product so far has been quite similar to my actual face. However I must take note of adding white and lighter coloured cardboard to balance out the artwork's colours.
Stage 5: Completed FaceĀ
I feel that the overall face is quite pleasing as there are many layers used in order to achieve the intended effect of many layers- which in this case is achieved. I feel that it can be improved by possibly adding more layers of white or brown paper so that there are more distinct features leading to the whole face looking more realistic.
Stage 6: Hair frame and backing
I feel that the Hair frame and backing are adequately cut out such that they do not interfere with the overall face, something that I am proud of, however, the hair frame was sometime unstable, and could easily fall off, so I feel that the backing could be thicker next time to better support the hair frame and reduce the chances of it falling out.
Stage 7: Hair
One good thing about the hair is that the ends are cut in a less sharper way, and the corrugated cardboard is also placed in a random way to make the hair look more realistic. However, it can be improved in the sense that it does not really look like my hair therefore next time I could cut it out according to oberservable patterns in my hair.
Stage 8: Completed face
The overall face looks like my actual face, which makes me feel a sense of accomplishment. I feel that it accurately represents visual features of my face and therefore I feel this is a job well done. However it can improve on terms of overall neatness, it looks quite messy, so next time I can put more emphasis on important features to let them stand out more and therefore the entire face will look less complicated.
Stage 9: Shirt and Blazer
I used a toothpaste box and a writing pad packaging to form this. I feel that it is well done in the sense that it stands out with emphasis with bright colours, as well as the creatvity to work with what I had. However, the cutting could have been neater to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing shirt.
Stage 10: Completed Body (Without Face)
The completed body looks very pleasing and satisfying as it shows the how the shirt and blazer look like on the body, and I think the overall effect of the shirt is achieved. However it could improve with neater cutting and more details, that would have helped the overall structure look better.
Stage 11: Completed Product
Overall, I feel very accomplished due to
What I learnt (Topographic layering)
The Final product (That has resemblance to my actual face, with the blazer helping it to look even better and more professional
Creativity, to use existing materials to create our best piece of artwork
perseverance, to never give up despite challenges like the artwork process being tedious or accidental mistakes.
I could have improved in:
Neatness, especially important to take note while cutting
Emphasis on important details, that add value and can be done by using more differently colored paper
Skills, like cutting and applying of glue, which can be trained through pure practice.
It has been a rewarding journey for me.
Praise- I am pleasantly surprised with the final product as I did not expect that the final product would look so precise. The many layers of the topographic blueprint of my face helps to bring out the many important parts of of my face and emphasises on the shadows of the prominent features, making the entire face look realistic and overall quite aesthetically pleasing. Throughout this process, I am glad that I have managed to train my perseverance for not giving up even when the artwork may be hard to complete, creativity for coming up with new ways to make the best out of my current situation and emerging stronger from challenges, as well as my motor skillsĀ as this project involved a lot of cutting and pasting and these skills allowed me to refine my motor skills. I am very happy with how the final art piece turned out as well as the process. Overall, I am satisfied with the progress I made during the process and the final artwork and I am thankful for having this valuable opportunity.
Polish- If I could do the artwork again, I feel that more layers in the form of yellow and white paper or cardboard could have been added to further achieve the aim of the realistic face. I could have also improved a lot in the neatness of cutting, given that there were many jagged edges that looked unpleasant and made the artwork look messy. I will try to take note of this and improve on my cutting skills for future art projects. I think this issue of cutting is coupled with my time management, as I missed one lesson and that caused me to rush at several points in time, to the point where I had to sometimes repeatedly cut and refine some pieces of cardboard that I accidentally cut improperly. Overall, I will make sure to take note of all these pointers and apply them be it in or outside art class and I hope an improvement in these factors will help me develop better in my skills and holistic development in the future.
