SELF PORTRAIT
contour outline blueprint of our face (week 2)
The first draft was to trace our photographs based on the lighting of the contour. The outlining of the features was easy but it was rather difficult to identify what parts were the shadows.
contour outline blueprint of my face (week 3)
Today we placed carbon paper between our photograph and drawing block, then we traced our drawing. I find it rather difficult since we must put in extra effort in order for the traces to appear on the drawing block.
traced portrait features - faciography (week 4)
Today, we traced the parts of our faces onto our cardboard. Afterwards, we labelled which part was for which half of our faces. lastly, we cut out the different facial features separately.
sticking on cut-out facial features and completing face assembling (week 5)
Today we glued the cut-out facial features onto our faces. At first, It was super confusing to identify the features of our left and right faces separately but in the end, the facial features are stuck to where they belong so it was pretty successful. In addition, I also identified the parts that required highlighting and used white cardboard for those areas instead.
hair assembling (week 6)
I realized we needed to have cardboard that has a slightly lighter shade of brown to highlight the contour so I used grey pieces of paper and stuck them onto my cut-out facial features. today we also used more cardboard to cut out the hair backing 1.5cm extra width.
completed hair assembling (week 6)
in addition, we used a bumpy piece of cardboard to cut out strips of hair. To mimic a realistic version of our hair, we had to cut many layers of cardboard and stick them together on a hair backing.
Shirt design (final look)
i specifically chose this pastel-coloured cardboard as the design I wanted for my shirt. The colours are soothing and sweet which reminded me of pyjamas. I cut out a small Hello Kitty box to create a little pocket in my shirt, I also put some Hello Kitty-themed deco tape on the shoulders to make the design more interesting. if i had the opportunity to redo my shirt, i would have used velcro tape instead of gluing it permanently, that way i would have mor e freedom with exploring other shirt designs
sticking on the velcro
i found it difficult to coordinate both the positions of the velcro, but eventually got the hang of it
add ons to my original hair design
I noticed that my hair design was quite boring so I cut out some brown paper strips to stick them into my hair. Hopefully, this allows more variety of colours within my self-portrait and makes my hair look more attractive
Extra hair design 2)
After completing my tasks, I had some to create a secextra timeond hair design. Initially, I wanted to create a curly hair design but it didn't turn out nice. Hence I used some of those curly strips and created some sort of bangs instead. I also used the bumpy cardboard to cut out strips and pasted them in a disorderly fashion. In the end, It looks like a "I just woke up from bed situation" hence it fits the theme.
final look with hair design 2)
making a stand for my portrait
we stick two pieces of masking tape onto a long cardboard. very simple process.
final look with hair design 1)
i really like how my portrait turned out :) it kind of resembles me
PRAISE
I really like how my artwork turned out, I felt that my overall design was unique as the pyjama shirt goes really well with the messy hair hence complimenting the "I just woke up from bed" theme. I liked that the messy hairstyle was a bold idea and I wasn't afraid to experiment with different hairstyle designs. In addition, I also really like the brown strips of paper in my hair design. Although it was a last-minute decision, the brown strips contrast really well with the pieces of cardboard used for my hair. It definitely improved the overall attractiveness of my hair design so I'm really proud of it. In general, I really appreciate my artwork for its simplicity and sense of individuality that represents myself.
POLISH
There's definitely room for improvement in my artwork. Firstly, I could have velcroed my shirt on instead without gluing it directly as it limits the freedom of my design. Secondly, I felt like I could have identified a few more areas for highlight and contour. Thirdly, instead of using brown cardboard, I should have tried to include cardboard of other colours, such as gold and silver strips in my hair design to make it look more attractive. Lastly, I should have tried using a variety of cardboard materials to give extra texture and uniqueness to my artwork.
