Dear Wonderful Wilmot Parents,
Thank you to everyone who came to parent teacher conferences this past week. One of the things I really appreciate about elementary school is that we get to know kids well and we’re able to visit with parents for an extended period of time. I also want to give a big shout out to all of the parents who helped provide meals for teachers during conference week! When teachers and staff are at school from 6:45am to 6:45 pm, it is so nice not to have to worry about grabbing something for lunch and dinner!
We have several things going on this week including the due date for Fun Run donations on Monday, October 21st. So far we are at 71% of our goal. Every donation matters and we are so appreciative of your support for student enrichment opportunities, technology, fun events, and teacher appreciation. Prize day is coming up on Wednesday the 30th.
Our second graders will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) this week and first grade is going on a field trip to the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Coming up on Saturday is the inaugural Trunk or Treat at Evergreen HS. We still need adult volunteers to act as crossing guards for this event. Please see below for a link to the sign up.
Halloween is just around the corner so I want to remind everyone about the rules around costumes and our schedule for that day. Costumes should be age appropriate and cannot include any toy weapons, including swords, light sabers, guns, etc. or bad language. For those who are new to Wilmot, students bring (not wear) their costumes to school. At about 12:40, after lunch and recess, students change into their costumes before the parade starts at 1:00. Parents are welcome to come watch the parade in the bus circle (weather permitting) and stay for classroom parties from 1:30-2:20. I will include more information in next Sunday’s Wilmot Weekly.
Looking out a bit further, Monday November 11th is Veteran’s Day. Our Wilmot school community would like to honor veterans from around Evergreen. If you are a veteran or know a veteran, please fill out the form below. Our assembly will be the morning of the 11th at 8:00 am. Also in the Weekly is information about our new cell phone/smart watch policy, picture orders, and Wilmot wear among other things.
I hope you have a wonderful rest of your weekend. I’m looking forward to seeing you at school this week!

Shout out to Mr. Jake for making the world a better place. He has developed a system for stacking and recycling our lunch trays for both breakfast and lunch. This has significantly reduced the amount of landfill waste created by Wilmot and the amount of trash bags used daily. Check out those tiny garbage piles. Thank you for your hard work and dedication.

I hope we are all getting excited for Battle of the Books! I know Mrs. Anderson said the kids are checking out the books and all the ones I have read are OUTSTANDING! Since Mrs. Anderson and I are working together this year as coaches, we will have more times to meet with our readers. This is sometimes just a quite time and space to read the books. As the competition approaches, we will work on note taking skills, memorization of vocabulary and begin the trivia portion of the training.
Looking at the master schedule I believe these times will work for our 4th and 5th graders:
Tue, Thurs, Friday - 1:45 - 2:30 (in the STEM classroom)
Wednesday (during your grades lunch and recess in the Library)
Please read through the information below and discuss this incredible opportunity with your child. We can't wait to get teams formed and start reading these amazing titles! Thank you, Mrs. Mihalik

At Wilmot, we believe that school is for learning. We also believe that personal cell phones, bluetooth headphones, and smart watches can be a major distraction to our learning environment and have a negative effect on our children’s brain development if used inappropriately. That being said, we understand and respect that families choose these items for their children due to safety concerns and convenience.
As such, we are implementing an Away for the Day policy. The expectation is that phones are off and in a child's backpack from bell to bell (7:40am - 2:35pm). We want to continue to teach our students how to use technology appropriately and appreciate your support at home.
If your student uses their cell phone at an inappropriate time, an adult will bring it to the main office and they can pick it up at the end of the day.
If we see the phone a second time, we will call home and let you know.
Anytime after that, parents will need to come in to pick up the phone for their child.
We have also seen an increase in inappropriate smartwatch usage. At this time, smartwatches are allowed to be worn for telling time, but not for communication during the school day. Smartwatches will be confiscated in the manner described for cell phones if students are using them for communication purposes. Please also note that wireless headphones are also not allowed during the school day.
Thank you for supporting us in keeping students focused on learning during the school day.
