Dear Wonderful Wilmot Parents,
I hope you’re staying warm and dry on this wet weekend! It’s hard to believe this week marks the beginning of May. On Thursday, our 5th graders went to STEM day at the Rockies. Please check out the attached video to hear more about how they prepared for the egg drop competition. As I shared, Wilmot was chosen as one of four schools to participate in the Egg Drop on the field. The students, teachers and volunteers had a great time, the egg survived the drop, and the Rockies won!
Mileage Club is starting up again this Tuesday and will continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the next 3 weeks. Kids can run around a course at recess and volunteers log their laps. As they go, they can earn little running feet on a necklace to keep track of their mileage. Saraben Turner is our parent sponsor, but we rely on parent volunteers to make it all work. We need two volunteers per block of time to help keep track of laps and hand out running feet. Please consider signing up for one or more of the blocks of time on this sheet: Mileage Club Volunteers. This year, we are encouraging parents to join in on the fun and come run laps to track as well. We will celebrate the kiddos and parents with the most laps at the end. So, come join as a volunteer or a runner and help make Mileage Club a fun success! Please see below for information about another opportunity for your child to participate in a trail running club after school.
I hope you’ll join me, incoming Wilmot Assistant Principal Katie Piane, and Resilience 1220 therapist and Wilmot mom, Charis Jaeger for a discussion about how to support your child as they grow on Thursday, May 2nd from 5-6 pm. We will focus primarily on the developmental and social milestones for children as they enter their preteens and early teens, including opportunities for questions and answers. This Friday is an assessment day so students only attend during their scheduled appointment. Teachers will be gathering end of year data for each student to gauge growth and progress towards grade level standards. Please see below for a link to sign your child up for an assessment time.
Please check out the Wilmot Weekly for other happenings this week. I look forward to seeing you at school!

Book Blast Success - Last Chance to Participate
Dear Families,
Our Book Blast event has just a few days left. If you haven’t yet, register your student and invite at least 10 friends and family: http://bookblast.booksarefun.com/WilmotES80439
Already registered? We still need your help to get more books for our students. Inviting 2 more friends or family to this wonderful cause will help us reach our goal (use the link above).
Your participation also helps our teachers earn school supplies and books for their classrooms, and your student still has a chance to win a Treasure Chest stuffed with prizes!
Thank you for showing our students they are supported by you, your friends, family, and our community!
Thank you
THIS THURSDAY, May 2nd, 5-6pm

Another running opportunity is the EPRD Youth Trailing Running Class. The first of its kind, this class will teach our littlest trail runners all about the outdoor recreation hobby of trail running in a safe and fun environment. Participants will explore local Evergreen trails and get the chance to run wild with their peers after school! Registration is for ages 5 years old to 10 years old. Class is held on Tuesdays from school dismissal to 3:45pm from April 30- May 21. There is also an EPRD Youth Trail Run on May 18th that parents can join in on for no additional cost. This will be a great way to end the year actively and in conjunction with Mileage Club.

Curious about how math acceleration works in Jeffco and at Wilmot? Please see THIS LINK for details. If you have any further questions, contact us in the main office at Wilmot.
Jeffco Public Schools has adopted a new math resource for our kindergarten through 12th grade students. For many years, children in the United States have lagged behind children in other countries in math achievement. Research about the way other countries teach math has given us a window into why. Countries that consistently outperform the US emphasize conceptual understanding over rote memorization. In addition, struggling is not seen as a failure, but a path to deeper understanding. Illustrative Math grew out of what researchers learned about how other countries successfully teach mathematics. We understand that making this shift feels uncomfortable to parents (and teachers) who themselves learned math through memorization and repetition, but we believe this is a worthwhile change that will lead to deeper understanding and better outcomes for our children. To help parents better understand the change and support their children, we've included several online resources here. The videos are especially helpful! Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have additional questions or for more links to grade-specific resources.
