April is Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month
Dear Wonderful Wilmot Parents,
I hope you're enjoying the amazing weather this weekend. Although I am sure we have more chilly weather to come before summer, the sunshine and warmth felt so good. Last week was a lot of fun at Wilmot as you can see by the many pictures. We had an amazing Wilmot Warbler’s concert on Thursday evening. Thank you to Mrs. Karford, Ms. Kim, and to all of the Warblers for their time and effort this year! There is one more practice this week and then a final concert for the student body on April 23rd.
On Friday we conducted our Evacuation Drill to Evergreen High School, assisted by our Principal of the Day, Evan Courington. We started with a fire drill at 8:45 and then moved into the evacuation drill. We safely moved all of our preschool through 5th grade students and staff to the high school and took attendance in less than 15 minutes! All students did a great job walking calmly and quietly over to the high school for this drill.
Principal for the Day
Principal Courington
Principal Courington and I enjoyed lunch from his choice of restaurant, Beau Jo’s, and attended the Author’s Tea hosted by our kindergarten students. The kindergarteners were so excited to sing for their families and share the books they wrote this year. I hope this is the start of a new tradition for kindergarten!
Please take a few moments to scroll down and look at some of the items up for bidding in the PTA Silent Auction, including opportunities in the fall and spring for your child to be the Principal of the Day. It will be open until this Friday at 6:00 pm. This Friday is also the spring Friendship Dance in the gym and cafeteria from 4:30-7:00 pm. Kids always have a blast! Please see the links below to purchase tickets.
Lastly, I want to share the wonderful news that Wilmot will have an Assistant Principal next school year. After a rigorous interview process, we’ve chosen Katie Piane to be our new AP. Katie is a member of the Evergreen community and was a teacher and administrator at Evergreen Middle School before taking a couple of years off to be with her own children. Currently, she is an Assistant Principal at a middle school down the hill. Katie is excited to bring two of her three children with her to Wilmot. Though she will not officially start at Wilmot until July, she attended our Wilmot Council meeting this month and will be one of the panelists for a parent presentation on May 2nd from 5-6 pm. I will share more details next week about this presentation focused on how you can support your child as their social and academic environments change.
Please check out the Wilmot Weekly for other happenings this week. I look forward to seeing you at school and at the spring dance on Friday!

Jeffco Public Schools has adopted a new math resource for our kindergarten through 12th grade students. For many years, children in the United States have lagged behind children in other countries in math achievement. Research about the way other countries teach math has given us a window into why. Countries that consistently outperform the US emphasize conceptual understanding over rote memorization. In addition, struggling is not seen as a failure, but a path to deeper understanding. Illustrative Math grew out of what researchers learned about how other countries successfully teach mathematics. We understand that making this shift feels uncomfortable to parents (and teachers) who themselves learned math through memorization and repetition, but we believe this is a worthwhile change that will lead to deeper understanding and better outcomes for our children. To help parents better understand the change and support their children, we've included several online resources here. The videos are especially helpful! Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have additional questions or for more links to grade-specific resources.
Meet us at The Colorado Creamery on April 25th for fabulous ice cream and Wilmot friends.
