Dear Wonderful Wilmot Parents,
We had a great turnout for the school dance on Friday in spite of the snowy weather. I particularly loved seeing our preschool and kindergarten students dance, dressed in whatever felt best - costume, formal wear, or PJs. Thank you to everyone who attended and especially to the many volunteers who made the dance and silent auction possible by helping with the planning, set up, and clean up!
This is a short week because there is no school for students on Friday. Teachers will be engaged in professional learning, planning for instruction, and completing end of year tasks. Tomorrow is the start of the Book Blast, an effort to get books in the hands of all students to read over the summer. Please see below for more information.
On Tuesday, our Wilmot Warblers will be performing for the school at 1:30 followed by an end of year celebration right after school. On Thursday, our 5th graders are going to STEM day at the Rockies. While they attend this event annually, this year is special because Wilmot was chosen as one of four schools to participate in the Egg Drop on the field. Our 5th graders worked in groups to design and engineer different models which were hurtled off the building on Friday. All eggs survived but one design was voted as the best and will be used as our Wilmot Egg Drop submission. We are excited to have this opportunity to participate! Also on Thursday is the Ice Cream Social at Colorado Creamery. Please join other Wilmot families for some sweets and fun.
Looking ahead, I hope you’ll join me, incoming Wilmot Assistant Principal Katie Piane, and Resilience 1220 therapist and Wilmot mom, Charis Jaeger for a discussion about how to support your child as they grow on Thursday, May 2nd from 5-6 pm. We will focus primarily on the developmental and social milestones for children as they enter their preteens and early teens, including opportunities for questions and answers.
Lastly, I want to share more exciting news about the 24-25 school year. We are thrilled to announce that Mrs. Marcus will be full time at Wilmot starting next year! Being full time at Wilmot will allow her to host an art club and to meet regularly with students on Advanced Learning Plans. She will be guiding these students in all phases of envisioning, researching, designing, and presenting a passion project of their choice. In addition to the enrichment Mrs. Marcus will be providing, we are proud to offer embedded STEM and social emotional learning, an opportunity to participate in the spelling bee, civic engagement through the Community Action Team, creative expression through the art club, Wilmot Warblers Choir, and the talent show, and opportunities to develop meaningful connections with students in other grades through “study buddies”. In addition, we are planning to establish a Student Leadership Group that will work with the school Leadership Team to provide a student perspective in school decisions.
Please check out the Wilmot Weekly for other happenings this week. I look forward to seeing you at school!

Curious about how math acceleration works in Jeffco and at Wilmot? Please see THIS LINK for details. If you have any further questions, contact us in the main office at Wilmot.
Jeffco Public Schools has adopted a new math resource for our kindergarten through 12th grade students. For many years, children in the United States have lagged behind children in other countries in math achievement. Research about the way other countries teach math has given us a window into why. Countries that consistently outperform the US emphasize conceptual understanding over rote memorization. In addition, struggling is not seen as a failure, but a path to deeper understanding. Illustrative Math grew out of what researchers learned about how other countries successfully teach mathematics. We understand that making this shift feels uncomfortable to parents (and teachers) who themselves learned math through memorization and repetition, but we believe this is a worthwhile change that will lead to deeper understanding and better outcomes for our children. To help parents better understand the change and support their children, we've included several online resources here. The videos are especially helpful! Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have additional questions or for more links to grade-specific resources.
