Dear Wonderful Wilmot Parents,
Thank you for coming out to volunteer for and cheer kids on during Field Day and the Tug-O-War on Friday. I also want to thank Coach (Ms. McMenamin) for all of the time and effort she invested in making Field Day a success!
This week at Wilmot is pretty packed! We have the Book Fair open all week from 7:25-3:15. Kids will have the opportunity to visit during the school day as well as right after school with a parent or guardian present. You can create an ewallet for your child using the information below. On Tuesday we have the PTA meeting in the STEM lab at 5:30 and the Wilmot Council meeting online at 7:15. Then on Thursday our Wilmot Warblers are going to the Rockies game to sing the national anthem!
On Friday . . . drum roll please . . . it’s Bandana Day! Kids might want to wear a bandana or western wear to school on Friday to get in the spirit. We are still hoping to fill some volunteer positions. If you can give some time, please use this link to volunteer. Another way to help out is to bring a donation of a sweet treat for the cakewalk. Those donations should be dropped off in the office before 4 pm on Friday. Lastly, you can use this link, Bandana Day tickets, to purchase your tickets ahead of time so you can get right to enjoying the games, visiting with friends, or working on your chalk art entry!

Over the month of September, the Wilmot Community Action Team is having a shoe drive for Soles4Souls! This amazing organization changes lives in our country and around the world by providing new and used shoes to people in need. Please donate shoes of any kind by placing them in the bins in the front hall by September 29. If you could tie the laces together or put a rubber band around them, it would be very helpful. The Blue Spruce Kiwanis will pick them up and deliver them to Soles4Souls. The link below has a lot of information, including how the shoes are distributed, and all the ways that they help people. Thank you to those of you who have already donated! We have a great collection already! Your generosity makes a difference. https://soles4souls.org/about-us/
Thank you again for your generosity and support!

September is Attendance Awareness Month. This year, Jeffco is dedicated to providing extraordinary student experiences by making student attendance a priority. Across Colorado and the country, student chronic absenteeism is on the rise.
Chronic absence is defined as missing 10 percent or greater of the total number of days enrolled during the school year for any reason. This means a student missing about 18 days during a school year. It includes both excused, unexcused, out-of-school suspensions, and in-school suspensions that last more than one-half of the school day.
In the 2020-21 school year, at least 10.1 million students nationwide were chronically absent. We estimate chronic absence has more than doubled from the more than 8 million students, pre-Covid-19, who were missing so many days of school that they were academically at risk.
Chronic absence — missing 10 percent or more of school days due to absence for any reason—excused, unexcused absences and suspensions—can translate into students having difficulty learning to read by the third-grade, achieving in middle school, and graduating from high school. Read this research summary for more details.
Colorado has the sixth highest absenteeism rate, tied with Nevada at 36%, up from 23% pre-pandemic.
Jeffco’s 2022-23 chronic absenteeism rate was 26%.
The Wilmot community works together to ensure high levels of learning for all. This includes not only being attentive to academic growth, but also recognizing that the social and emotional growth of students is critically important. We now have the opportunity to systematically screen the social and emotional skills of all our students. We will be using the Social Skills Improvement System™ Social-Emotional Learning Edition Screening/Progress Monitoring Scales (SSIS SEL) to screen students' social-emotional competencies. This will occur 3 times throughout the school year. Teachers will be asked to score each student in their class in six areas: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision making and motivation to learn. If you have any questions please contact Liz Wehr at elizabeth.wehr@jeffco.k12.co.us or call 303-982-5370
