This need arises on account of some unsafe and inconsiderate driving and movement around the campus. We are very aware and incredibly grateful for so many members of the community respecting each other and driving safely, however it is the case that this doesn’t extend to all people at all times - and we need it to. Our motto and values must be more than simply words and must be modelled by all members of the community, else how can we expect our pupils to model them?
Please could you all:
Make time to sit together and speak to all members of your family that attend DC or visit for pick-ups and drop-offs and explain to them you know there has been inconsiderate driving and movement that risks the safety of the community.
Ask any child at the school that arrives or leaves without you to cross only using designated crossings and to leave a vehicle or enter it only in designated parking areas, not on the road.
Drive and move around the campus with awareness and consideration for all and at all times. We appreciate many members are busy and have competing demands on their time with pressure for the next place to be or task to do, but the extra minute or two is always better than risking the safety of those in our special community. Discuss this when you have your family chat, which needs to involve any nanny or driver also, and commit as a family to upholding our values of respect and integrity.
Ensure you follow, at all times, any guidance or requests made by Security or school staff. They are exceptional teams that will put themselves between danger and you/your child and deserve recognition and thanks for the role they have. If ever you take issue with something they have said or done please know that they are applying the rules they have been given to deliver safety; any frustrations need to be focused only to me or another member of the leadership team.
We have discussed this matter again as a leadership team and Mr Scafe and Mr Watson will also oversee some school-level initiatives to highlight the importance and actions required from their pupils, involving them in the topic and highlighting how they need to act personally.
Finally, I would highlight that I recognise we have a challenge in relation to reach, as those that have read this note will almost certainly not be the ones that are acting without due consideration for other members of the community. However, by all us doing what we can we believe it will help deliver the changes needed from others. In addition, it is of course a personal decision - and you must always act in accordance with Qatari laws and regulations - but you could absolutely report any unsafe driving on Metrash should you witness it and wish to.
Thanks for giving this your time and please do organise a time to discuss the content meaningfully with your family unit.
Kind regards,
David Lish
