This week in our Primary assembly, we continued the launch of the DC Learner Profile with a focus on the third aspect: seek challenges, embrace new experiences and grow from our mistakes. It is crucial that we support and encourage children to approach challenges with a positive mindset as they will face these every day! Making mistakes and getting things wrong is also an important part of the learning process and is not to be feared; an important message for all children to hear and understand.
With Year 3-6 children, Mr Cann explored some famous and successful figures who have faced considerable challenges and made many mistakes along the way before achieving great success. The children learnt about Vincent Van Gogh who only sold one painting during his life but never gave up producing wonderful artwork, Beethoven who was told by his teachers that he would never be a successful composer and Serena Williams who grew up in a neighbourhood with very few facilities where she could train. Children were asked to consider the powerful quote: ‘hard work beats talent, when talent fails to work hard,’ along with the excuses we can sometimes use when learning feels difficult.
In the Year 1-3 assembly, children enjoyed hearing the story of ‘The Reluctant Ladybird’ who was nervous about flying before he had given it a try. The children heard about all the reasons the ladybird had for not giving this skill a go, and how proud he felt when he faced the challenge and succeeded. Children in our younger year groups were encouraged to be like the ladybird as they face their learning challenges in the next week. Early Years children will also explore this story and its themes in the coming weeks.
By encouraging and supporting children to persevere and learn from every experience, we are developing a growth mindset in all, demonstrating that effort and courage leads to great learning and success. Our children are excellent ambassadors for embracing challenges and their teachers certainly provide this in abundance every day.
We look forward to welcoming parents to our Curriculum Meetings taking place in the auditorium over the next two weeks. Please do take note of the day and time for your child/ren’s year group which was provided in last week’s newsletter and also on Class Dojo.
