Last week in College, I had the great pleasure of judging the Year 9 Dragon’s Den competition, which was run collaboratively by the Geography and Business and Economics departments. The aim of the competition was for teams to develop their own business ideas and then pitch these ideas to the panel of judges.
I was amazed by the quality of the presentations, and the activity helps underline how important public speaking is in the world of business and beyond. Mehdi Hasan’s recent book ‘Win Every Argument’ distils the debating and public speaking process into a series of recommendations that are presented in an accessible and entertaining fashion. These include:
Winning over an audience with a memorable opening;
Appealing to an audience’s feelings rather than just presenting facts;
Demonstrating that you have a profound understanding of the material you are presenting;
Listening rather than just speaking;
Including humour;
Using the ‘rule of three’ to present more complicated arguments;
Keeping calm and carrying on;
Trying to project confidence and warmth;
Doing your homework to fully understand the nuances of what you are presenting;
Practising, practising and practising some more.
Hussain, M (2023) Win Every Argument
Congratulations to the overall winners, Year 9YS - Sara Al Thani, Zarina Geadal, Olivia Kenward, Ellie Powell, and Aurora Gopau, representing House Scorpion.
Inspirational Vision: The speech paints a compelling vision of a future where individuals are judged by their character rather than the colour of their skin. Dr. King envisioned a world where racial discrimination and prejudice would be overcome, emphasising unity and equality.
Poetic and Rhythmic Language: Dr. King's speech is filled with powerful rhetoric, metaphorical language, and repetition, which resonate deeply and linger in the minds of listeners. His rhythmic cadence and the use of phrases like "I have a dream" emphasise key points and make the speech emotionally stirring.
Appeal to Emotions and Values: Dr. King appeals to the emotions and values of his audience, tapping into their sense of justice, fairness, and compassion. He evokes empathy and a sense of moral obligation to work towards a better, more equal society.
Historical and Cultural Context: The speech was delivered at a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement. Against the backdrop of widespread racial segregation and discrimination, Dr. King's words were a rallying cry for change, galvanising the movement and inspiring millions to join the cause for civil rights.
Universal Themes of Freedom and Justice: Dr. King's speech tapped into universal themes of freedom, justice, and equality that resonate with people across generations and backgrounds. It was not just about the African-American struggle; it was about the broader struggle for human rights.
Personal Passion and Conviction: Dr. King's deep passion for the cause and his unwavering conviction in the righteousness of the struggle were evident in his delivery. His sincerity and authenticity amplified the impact of his words, making them resonate with authenticity and truth.
A Call to Action: The speech is not only about expressing a vision but also a call to action. Dr. King urged people to stand up, speak out, and work for the change they wanted to see, emphasising that the struggle for civil rights was a collective effort.
As we head into Black History Month, which began this week, the "I Have a Dream" speech's enduring power lies in its ability to articulate a vision for a more just and equal society, to tap into the core values and emotions of humanity, and to serve as a catalyst for change during a critical time in history. Its words continue to inspire and motivate people to strive for a world where everyone is treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.
It is wonderful to see Doha College as the only school in Qatar to be again ranked as one of the very best private schools in the World in the prestigious School's Index by Carfax Education (see here).
To see Doha College ranked alongside other leading schools - including Eton College, Harrow and Wellington College in the UK - is a testament to the outstanding work going on within each and every classroom. A recent analysis of our academic outcomes puts us right at the top of the Middle Eastern category in terms of our results at both (I)GCSE and A Level for comparable 3-18 schools that made the list.
Doha College's success in being the best of the very best is a direct result of the exceptional staff who work within the school and the students they educate. I would like to dedicate this achievement to their combined hard work and dedication. It is also pleasing to see my former school (St George's in Rome) make the European list, and I also pass on my congratulations to all my former colleagues and students.
What a fitting day it is to announce that Doha College is the only school in Qatar to have been ranked as one of the very best private schools in the World in the prestigious School’s Index by Carfax Education.
Accolades such as this can only be achieved through the exceptional talent, hard work and dedication of a highly committed teaching and support staff body. It is vital that this is recognised and appreciated, and the annual Teacher Appreciation Day, is just one way by which this can be achieved. Please join me in thanking all teachers around the world for the excellent work they do to help prepare our future generations for the many challenges they will face.
Today, on Teacher Appreciation Day at DC, we want to shine a spotlight on the incredible educators who inspire and shape the future of our students at Doha College!
To our dedicated teachers, you are the guiding stars who ignite our students' lifelong passion for learning. Your commitment, patience, and enthusiasm make every day a journey of discovery, and for that, we are truly grateful. From nurturing curiosity in the classroom to fostering a love for knowledge that extends far beyond our school walls, you are the driving force behind it all. Your unwavering support and dedication do not go unnoticed. Let's take a moment to digest the tribute from Eliza and Kareem as we celebrate and honour these exceptional individuals who light up our students' lives, one lesson at a time.
Your impact is immeasurable, and we appreciate you today and every day.
Our assembly hall was transformed this week into a vibrant Caribbean paradise as the captivating sounds of steel pan and carnival-style music filled the air while we celebrated and learnt about Claudia Jones.
Claudia Jones was a heroine of civil rights and is known as the ‘Mother’ of the Notting Hill Carnival in London. We shared the extraordinary story and inspiring achievements of Claudia Jones, a prominent black civil rights activist.
Claudia Jones was a trailblazer born in Trinidad and Tobago on February 21, 1915. She grew up to become a courageous champion for civil rights and social justice. Throughout her life, she dedicated herself to fighting against racism and inequality.
Claudia's Remarkable Achievements:
1. A Voice for Justice: Claudia used her powerful voice and incredible writing skills to fight racism and discrimination. She believed that every person, regardless of their skin colour, deserved fairness and equality.
2. Trailblazing Journalism: Claudia Jones was a talented journalist. She founded the newspaper "The West Indian Gazette" in London, where she lived for many years. Through her newspaper, she shed light on the experiences and struggles of black communities, providing a platform for their voices to be heard.
3. Notting Hill Carnival: Claudia Jones played a pivotal role in the creation of the Notting Hill Carnival, one of the world's most celebrated and colourful festivals. She believed that celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Caribbean could help combat racism and bring communities together.
The Notting Hill Carnival, which Claudia Jones helped establish, is a vibrant celebration of Caribbean culture. Every year, people from all backgrounds come together to dance, sing, and enjoy the festivities. It's a time to celebrate diversity and unity in the heart of London.
What We Can Learn from Claudia Jones:
Claudia Jones's life teaches us important lessons:
1. Equality for All: Claudia showed us that everyone should be treated with fairness and respect, regardless of their race or background.
2. Using Your Talents: Just like Claudia used her skills as a writer and journalist, we can use our unique talents to make a positive impact in our communities.
3. Celebrating Diversity: The Notting Hill Carnival reminds us to celebrate the beautiful diversity in our world. By embracing different cultures, we can build a more inclusive and harmonious society.
4. Courage and Perseverance: Claudia faced many challenges, but she never gave up on her fight for justice. Her determination inspires us to overcome obstacles with courage and perseverance.
Claudia Jones left a lasting legacy of activism, cultural celebration, and unity. Her story reminds us that each of us can make a difference in the world. As we honoured Claudia Jones and her contributions to civil rights and the Notting Hill Carnival, we asked the students to remember her as a symbol of hope and change. Together, we can work towards a world where everyone is treated with kindness, fairness, and respect. We encouraged each and every student and member of the school community to think about actions they can take personally to make Doha College school and community more inclusive and welcoming for everyone. Particularly how they can set individual goals for promoting equality, understanding, empathy, and a commitment to the values and principles championed by Claudia Jones – equality, unity, and the celebration of diverse cultures.
At Doha College all systems, processes and policies should operate with the best interests of the child at their heart. Doha College has an attitude of ‘it could happen here’ and ‘Child Centered Safeguarding’ Doha College expects all staff to share this commitment.
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play. In order to fulfil this responsibility effectively, all practitioners should make sure their approach is child-centered. This means that they should consider, at all times, what is in the best interest of the child.

As we enter the month of October, we come together to celebrate the significance of Black History Month. It is a time for us to shine a light on the remarkable contributions of Black women who have played a pivotal role in shaping our society. In this article, I want to introduce you to one such extraordinary figure, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, who has endured something no parent should ever experience; the death of their child in the most tragic of circumstances. Despite the immense personal cost, she has left an enduring impact on our collective conscience.
Baroness Doreen Lawrence, a name synonymous with determination and resilience, has dedicated her life to the pursuit of justice and equality. Following the tragic murder of her son, Stephen Lawrence, in a racially motivated attack, she embarked on a journey for justice that spanned years of heartache and uncertainty. The road to justice was long and arduous, filled with countless obstacles and setbacks. It took over two decades of relentless effort before those responsible for Stephen's murder were finally brought to justice.
The toll this quest for justice took on Baroness Lawrence and her family cannot be overstated. The emotional anguish, the years of legal battles, and the constant struggle against a system that was often resistant to change placed an immense burden on them. Yet, despite the adversity, Baroness Lawrence persevered. She faced unimaginable pain and hardship, not only in her relentless pursuit of justice but also in her dedication to improving the lives of others. Her commitment to her son's memory and her determination to ensure that his death would not be in vain is a testament to her strength of character.
As we celebrate Black History Month, let us remember and honour the exceptional contributions of Black women like Baroness Doreen Lawrence, who have had to endure tremendous personal sacrifices in their pursuit of justice and equality. Their resilience, advocacy, and commitment to positive change have paved the way for a more equitable and just society. May their stories inspire us all to work together in the spirit of unity and inclusion, and may we continue to recognise the invaluable contributions of Black women not only this month but throughout the year.
Best wishes,
Mr Scafe
