It was wonderful to welcome back the students at the beginning of the new academic year and I hope all members of our community have had a lovely summer.
In this week’s welcome assemblies with the Secondary School students, I spoke about the importance of setting visible, written goals that are both realistic but aspirational. During the assemblies I discussed evidence that shows physically writing down our goals, revisiting them frequently and breaking them down into smaller and more achievable steps increases the likelihood of successfully completing our goals.
I also spoke about the work of Angela Duckworth and her research into success, which highlights the importance of what she calls 'grit' on how successful people are in their education and professional lives. Her work concludes that those individuals with an abundance of grit invariably have two attributes:
A passion for a top-level goal;
The dedication and perseverance to see things through to the end.
I set all of the secondary students the challenge of formulating and writing down their own goals for the coming academic year, so please do discuss these with them if and when you get the opportunity.

Principal
Her role will be to:
build relationships with donors and sponsors to help increase our non-fee income (so we continue to attract and retain the very best staff and provide the very best facilities for your child/ren),
perform the lead role and link with our alumni, sharing success stories and journeys, establishing an alumni database, and introducing a mentoring programme (to ensure our relationship endures for a long time after the pupils leave DC), and
lead on many whole campus events to bring together our special community (to make sure we develop relationships across ages and stages for all in the wider DC family).
Rashmi has a rich background of experience in Education, Business Development and PR and is brimming with ideas and enthusiasm but would love to hear from you with any ideas or suggestions related to the above and especially if you can help make introductions for her/us that would be far more effective than a cold call or equivalent.
She is keen to hear from any ex-students and past graduates who would like to remain part of the Doha College family. Alumni are an invaluable part of our story, facilitating personal growth of our current cohort as well as enhancing their own connections with classmates and staff from their formative years.
If you would like to discuss any Development or Alumni ideas, please get in touch and please do give the alumni email address to any family or friends you know were previously at DC: alumni@dohacollege.com development@dohacollege.com

As we begin another exciting year at Doha College, I want to highlight the incredible benefits of your child learning a musical instrument. Beyond the joy of performing music, playing an instrument develops critical skills such as discipline, concentration, and creativity. It improves cognitive abilities, enhances academic performance, boosts self-esteem, and offers a wonderful way for your child to express themselves.
I am excited to announce that we now have openings for beginner guitar, woodwind, brass and piano lessons for students in Year 3 and above in Primary, as well as all year groups in Secondary.
Due to high demand, I recommend registering your interest as soon as possible to avoid being placed on our waiting list. New students will begin with a free trial lesson to assess their suitability for the chosen instrument and if needed, an alternative instrument
may be offered.
If you are interested in registering your child for music lessons, please do so by contacting the team at musicinfo@dohacollege.com or by logging into our Members Area.
Essential Information You Need to Know
Registration is now open
Term 1 concludes on Thursday, 12th December.
Once registered, be sure to select "BOOK PROGRAMME" and follow each step to complete the process. Our instrumental team will be notified and will add your child to their schedules.
After registration is confirmed, an invoice will be generated. Your child will receive their free lesson and be allocated a regular slot. Payment for the remainder of the term will be required at that time. A member of our instrumental team will contact you to discuss scheduling. Please note that the Instrumental Department follows a strict "No Pay, No Play" policy.
The final week of Term 1 is reserved for catch-up lessons and is not part of the regular teaching schedule.
We warmly welcome both new and returning students to our instrumental lessons, and we look forward to a fantastic musical journey together this term!

We are pleased to inform you that sign-ups for our upcoming CCA activities have been higher than ever. This overwhelming response is a testament to your commitment to your children's growth and development. We are excited to welcome the students and look forward to the start of CCAs this Sunday.
To help you locate your children during pick-up times, we have uploaded videos on the school website. These videos will provide you with clear guidance on the pick-up process and ensure a smooth transition at the end of the day.
Once again, we apologise for the temporary disruption in our services earlier in the week. We are committed to providing you with a seamless experience and will work tirelessly to prevent such incidents in the future.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

This week, our students have jumped straight into their exciting enquiry based learning challenges, with each year group focussing on a different theme to launch their learning for the year. We are delighted to be welcoming our families onto campus at the end of next week in order to share this learning with you. Our AHTs will be communicating directly with you regarding the times and days for the visits.
In addition to this, we are also excited to be welcoming all of our parents to our upcoming curriculum meetings. Mr Cann (our new DHT academic) has further details regarding this in his letter below. These meetings are an important opportunity for you to hear from our teams about the exciting learning and opportunities that will be coming up across the year. It also provides an important platform for you to ask any questions you may have. Please save the date and join us!
In our assembly this week, we looked at our school motto, ‘Excellence for all, excellence from all’. We linked this to the Olympic motto of Citius, Altius, Fortius (faster, higher, stronger). In particular, we focused on excellence being a journey and a mindset rather than a destination. Like the Olympic motto, our school motto is not about being better than anyone else, rather it is about our shared vision of continually working hard to be the best version of ourselves. This is the mindset we endeavour to foster in our young learners and we look forward to exploring this further as the year progresses. Please do ask your children about Olympic icebergs!
Lastly, I would like to give some important staffing updates that will come into effect from Sunday 8th September. Mrs Danielle Price will be starting her maternity leave and I am sure you will join me in sending our best wishes to her and her family. As a result of this, Mrs Shainaz Dalvi will be taking on the role of DHT Pastoral until Mrs Price returns. Mr Scott Martindale will subsequently assume the role of AHT for UKS2 (Year 5 and Year 6) with Mrs Hannah Shorrocks assuming the role of HOY4 and Ms Lauren Jenkins taking on the role of DHOY4.
At the end of a busy week, I am very much looking forward to welcoming you to our showcase events next week. Please have a restful weekend.

The corridors and classrooms have been brought to life with such electricity, and it’s been wonderful to see so many smiling faces once again. We’ve truly missed the excitement our students bring to school every day. This week, we’ve held a series of engaging assemblies to remind everyone of our core values and the importance of being responsible, both in school and in the digital world. As we settle back in, we’re excited for the year ahead and look forward to seeing all our students continue to thrive!

As we prepare for the new academic year together, we’re excited to share an important update regarding our ongoing commitment to enhancing the learning environment at Doha College Secondary School.
3-2-1 Countdown to Phone Pouches
Starting from the first day of school, we’ll begin a three-week countdown, leading up to the official launch of phone pouches on 22nd September. This countdown is designed to help all of us—students, staff, and families—smoothly transition to this new system.
Launch Day, 22nd September
On this special launch day, our students will attend a special year group assembly where they will receive their pouches. These pouches will securely lock their mobile phones and small smart devices such as watches during school hours, helping us ensure a focused and distraction-free learning environment. We kindly ask that you ensure the purchase of the pouch by this date or, alternatively, let us know if your child will not be bringing a mobile or smart device to school. The pouch costs 117 QAR and can be paid via SchoolsBuddy under "Outstanding Fees."
Adjusting to the New Policy
In the lead-up to the implementation, any student found with a device on their person, including in their pockets, will be issued a consequence point on iSams. To help our students adjust to this new policy, from 22nd September, any student not following the guidelines will have the device confiscated, receive an after-school detention and a responsible adult must collect the device in person from reception. Starting from 2nd November, if students continue to struggle with meeting these expectations, an internal suspension will be issued.
As we’ve communicated before, the introduction of phone pouches is part of our shared commitment to providing a safe and distraction-free learning experience. This initiative is a significant step forward in ensuring that our students can fully focus on their studies, free from the distractions of mobile phones and smart devices.
If you need to communicate with your child urgently during school hours, please contact our Front Office, and we’ll make sure your message is relayed promptly.
For those who have chosen not to bring a mobile device to school, please complete the designated form HERE to confirm this choice.
Lastly, we’ve prepared a parent guide to the phone pouches, which you can access HERE. These questions reflect feedback from our consultations with parents, students, and the Yondr team.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to create an optimal and safe learning environment for our students.

Secondary Deputy Head - Pastoral
We are excited to share some important changes to our homework strategy that will enhance your child’s learning experience.
Research shows that retrieval practice and quizzing are highly effective methods for reinforcing learning, allowing students to remember and apply knowledge more effectively. This approach, supported by cognitive science, ensures that homework is not just a task but a powerful tool for long-term retention.
