Dear Parents,
A reminder that the school will be closed on Sunday, 20th April. Please reference the key dates for April below, as we look forward to an exciting week ahead.
As parents, we often hear our children communicating online in ways that feel unfamiliar and, at times, concerning. Many parents share sentiments such as "It just makes me feel old—I don’t know what this means!"
In our roles, we recognise that keeping children safe involves understanding their world, including the language they use online. Often, terms that appear harmless at face value can carry hidden meanings or implications, posing risks that we should be aware of. It is essential for us to maintain a strong connection to our children's online interactions, enabling open, informed discussions about online safety, relationships, and digital behaviour.
To support us in achieving this, we have a valuable resource available: a clear and accessible guide to the most common cyber slang currently used by children. The guide provides explanations for frequently used terms such as "tea" (gossip), "cap" (lying or exaggerating), "rizz" (charisma), and other words or phrases that might be regularly used by children online and in everyday conversations.
By using this guide, we can increase our awareness and understanding of how children communicate today, allowing us to recognise potential issues more quickly and facilitate important conversations. It also provides an opportunity to bridge the generational gap, helping us stay informed about our child's experiences and relationships both online and offline.
We encourage you all to utilise this resource and remain actively engaged in your children's digital lives. If you have any questions or require further advice regarding online safety or digital safeguarding, please feel welcome to contact the safeguarding team.
