I am delighted to share an important change to our school day that we hope will have a significant impact on your child’s wellbeing and development.
From next term, we will be adjusting our break schedule from one fifteen-minute and one forty-minute break to two thirty-minute breaks. This simple change means that children will have 50% more time to play, explore, and interact with their peers by providing an opportunity to play and eat at both break times.
This decision is rooted in research highlighting the crucial role of unstructured play in a child’s development. Jonathan Haidt, in his book ‘The Anxious Generation’, argues that a decline in free play is one of the key factors contributing to rising levels of anxiety and decreased resilience in children. He highlights that play is not just a ‘break’ from learning but an essential part of it, helping children develop independence, problem-solving skills, and social confidence.
By reorganising breaks to increase the amount of time children have to play, we are giving our students more opportunities to develop friendships, practice negotiation and conflict resolution, and engage in the kind of creative, self-directed activities that build confidence and well-being. More time to play will also allow for deeper and more meaningful play experiences, whether through imaginative games, physical activity, or quiet reflection.
With children’s well-being and happiness as a key priority here at Doha College, we feel that it is our responsibility as educators to create an environment where they can move freely, take risks, and develop key social skills. We believe this change will not only enhance their enjoyment of the school day but also support their emotional and mental well-being.
We look forward to seeing the benefits unfold and welcome any feedback as we implement this positive step forward.
