We recently received the wonderful news that a number of our Year 13 students who had applied for early decisions in elite universities and highly competitive courses have been given conditional offers. This includes one student who has been given a conditional offer for Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) at Oxford University. This is widely regarded to be the most competitive course in any institution and has left an indelible mark on British politics and public life, as evidenced in the following passage from a British daily newspaper:
Monday, 13 April 2015 was a typical day in modern British politics. An Oxford University graduate in philosophy, politics and economics (PPE), Ed Miliband, launched the Labour party’s general election manifesto. It was examined by the BBC’s political editor, Oxford PPE graduate Nick Robinson, by the BBC’s economics editor, Oxford PPE graduate Robert Peston, and by the director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, Oxford PPE graduate Paul Johnson. It was criticised by the prime minister, Oxford PPE graduate David Cameron. It was defended by the Labour shadow chancellor, Oxford PPE graduate Ed Balls.
Elsewhere in the country, with the election three weeks away, the Liberal Democrat chief secretary to the Treasury, Oxford PPE graduate Danny Alexander, was preparing to visit Kingston and Surbiton, a vulnerable London seat held by a fellow Lib Dem minister, Oxford PPE graduate Ed Davey. In Kent, one of Ukip’s two MPs, Oxford PPE graduate Mark Reckless, was campaigning in his constituency, Rochester and Strood. Comments on the day’s developments were being posted online by Michael Crick, Oxford PPE graduate and political correspondent of Channel 4 News.
On the BBC Radio 4 website, the Financial Times statistics expert and Oxford PPE graduate Tim Harford presented his first election podcast. On BBC1, Oxford PPE graduate and Newsnight presenter Evan Davies conducted the first of a series of interviews with party leaders. In the print media, there was an election special in the Economist magazine, edited by Oxford PPE graduate Zanny Minton-Beddoes; a clutch of election articles in the political magazine Prospect, edited by Oxford PPE graduate Bronwen Maddox; an election column in the Guardian by Oxford PPE graduate Simon Jenkins; and more election coverage in the Times and the Sun, whose proprietor, Rupert Murdoch, studied PPE at Oxford.
Whatever the merits or otherwise of having so much power and influence concentrated within so many people who have studied the same degree at the same university, it is clear that PPE is a highly competitive degree that has developed a reputation for growing future leaders capable of governing (including two out of the last three, and three out of the last five British Prime Ministers).
I have long been an advocate for the studying of philosophy both within and outside the curriculum. Studying philosophy can provide numerous benefits, as it encourages critical thinking, deepens understanding, and addresses fundamental questions about existence and knowledge. Here are some main reasons for studying philosophy:
Critical Thinking: Philosophy teaches analytical skills, helping individuals to think critically, evaluate arguments, and make informed decisions.
Clarity of Thought: Philosophy fosters clarity in expressing ideas, enabling individuals to communicate effectively and articulate their thoughts coherently.
Ethical Inquiry: Philosophical inquiry addresses ethical questions, helping individuals explore and understand moral principles, values, and ethical dilemmas.
Understanding the World: Philosophy delves into fundamental questions about reality, existence, and knowledge, providing a foundation for understanding the world and one's place in it.
Cultural and Historical Awareness: Studying philosophy exposes individuals to diverse cultural and historical perspectives, fostering an appreciation for different ideas and traditions.
Problem Solving: Philosophy encourages creative problem-solving by approaching issues from various angles and considering multiple perspectives.
Self-Reflection: Philosophical study prompts self-reflection, helping individuals understand their beliefs, values, and assumptions, leading to personal growth.
Intellectual Exploration: Philosophy explores a wide range of topics, from metaphysics and epistemology to ethics and aesthetics, allowing individuals to broaden their intellectual horizons.
Communication Skills: Philosophy enhances communication skills by emphasising the precise use of language, argumentation, and logical reasoning.
Preparation for Various Fields: Philosophical skills are transferable and valuable in various professions, including law, business, science, and education.
Congratulations to all those students who have received early decision offers and have a wonderful weekend everyone.

As we come to the end of our fourth week of the Term 2 CCA programme, we have been blown away by the amazing opportunities our students have been participating in as part of their CCA schedule. From secondary cooking classes, messy and forensic science experiments, basic electronics and PCB design courses, netball, basketball, football, F1 in motion, a Medical Conference and the continued success of DCMUN, amongst many others. In primary, we’ve had a gardening club, cooking, gymnastics, Zumba, chess and a plethora of others. Our students have been working hard, as always.
In order to support you further, we are launching the SchoolsBuddy iPad and mobile phone app. This app will allow you to see your child/children’s CCA allocations, along with the correct day, specific location and the lead teacher. You can download the app from your app store. The name of the app is SchoolsBuddy 2.0. Upon installing the app, type in Doha College and log in using your usual ISAMS username and password. If you need any assistance with these details, don't hesitate to get in touch with our IT team at help@dohacollege.com As you click on the calendar button at the bottom of the screen, you will see your child/children’s CCA allocations for the remainder of Term 2.
Thank you for your continued support of our CCA programme, and if you’ve not yet completed our parent feedback survey, please be reminded that it closes on 1st February at the end of the day.

We are excited to let you know about the upcoming Digital Safety & Well-being Week at Doha College, scheduled from February 4th until February 8th. In today's digital age, it has become increasingly crucial to educate our children about safe digital practices, the workings of machine algorithms, the negative effects of social media, and the potential for addiction. We will also hear from Al Tamimi, who are coming to Doha College to present to students on cybercrime and the consequences of posting material about other people online.
Digital Safety: In a world where technology is an integral part of our lives, teaching students how to stay safe online is paramount. Digital Safety Week will provide students with essential tools and knowledge to protect themselves from online threats, including cyberbullying, identity theft, and phishing scams.
Understanding Machine Algorithms: Machine algorithms power much of the technology we use daily, from search engines to social media platforms. By delving into this topic, students will gain a better understanding of how algorithms impact their online experiences, shaping the content they see and the information they receive.
Negative Effects of Social Media: Social media is a double-edged sword; while it connects people and offers numerous benefits, it can also have negative consequences on mental health and well-being. During this week, students will explore the potential pitfalls of excessive social media use and learn how to maintain a healthy balance.
Addressing Addiction: With the proliferation of smartphones and digital devices, digital addiction is a growing concern. Students will be educated about the signs of addiction and offered strategies for developing a healthy relationship with technology.
By dedicating a week to these crucial topics, Doha College is committed to ensuring that our students are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the digital landscape safely and responsibly. We encourage you to engage in conversations with your children about what they learn during this week, reinforcing the importance of digital safety and well-being at home.
Together, we can empower our students to make informed decisions, promote responsible digital citizenship, and lead balanced lives in our increasingly interconnected world.
I appreciate your support in fostering a safe and positive digital environment for our students.

As we gear up for an exciting week ahead with our upcoming Primary Sports Week taking place from Sunday 4th to Thursday 8th February, I wanted to take a moment to highlight the invaluable benefits that active lifestyles bring to the health and well-being of our children.
The primary school years are a crucial time for the development of lifelong habits, and an active lifestyle plays a pivotal role in shaping our children's well-being.
Physical activity is more than just a means of burning off energy; it is a cornerstone for the holistic development of our children. Regular exercise not only enhances physical health but also contributes significantly to cognitive function, concentration, and emotional resilience. By encouraging an active lifestyle, we are laying the foundation for a positive and thriving academic experience.
The focus of our Primary Sports Week is on a fun, friendly and child-centred approach to competition. The emphasis will be on collaboration and teamwork, with children in KS2 competing to gain points for their House teams. The events provide a wonderful opportunity for all Primary children to actively showcase their skills, build self-confidence and most importantly, have fun.
I encourage you to join us in supporting your child's participation in Sports Week by coming to spectate and perhaps even braving the parents’ obstacle race! Together, as a school community, we can empower our children to embrace an active lifestyle that will contribute to their overall health, happiness, and success for years to come.
Wishing everyone an exhilarating and enjoyable week ahead!

This event promises to be a unique opportunity for our Year 10 cohort to connect with professionals who have excelled in diverse sectors such as healthcare, aviation, STEAM-related industries (Science, Engineering, Arts and Maths), government, journalism, sport, IT, education, law and countless others.
The Aspirations Evening is designed to facilitate one-on-one interactions between our students and professionals, providing valuable insights into the educational and experiential paths that led these individuals to their current careers. This firsthand encounter allows students to pose questions, explore academic backgrounds, inquire about extracurricular pursuits, and gain an understanding of the challenges and triumphs faced by these professionals throughout their career journeys.
In preparation for this enriching evening, we will be conducting two workshops for the students during the day. The first workshop will focus on honing the skill of asking insightful questions, enabling students to extract valuable information and advice pivotal for shaping their career plans. The second workshop will centre around professional etiquette, equipping students with the necessary social skills to make the most of their interactions with the professionals later in the evening.
In short, our community is so wonderfully diverse in terms of our parents’ professional experiences, networks and wider friends, it could only help and support in adding huge value to how our students will consider their next steps - hearing it from the people who have ‘walked the walk’.
This is a plea to the entire DC Parent Body and Friends of DC community who would like to volunteer their time to support with this. If you are a parent of a child from EYFS to Year 13 and you feel you have the time to offer your support we’d appreciate very much to hear from you.
Additionally, if you have friends or neighbours in interesting professions who would be willing to contribute, we'd love to hear from them, too. To help us plan logistics more effectively, please fill out the Google form as an initial expression of interest.
We will confirm the exact dates of the event as soon as we are able to secure the participation of professionals from various fields.
Thank you for your support and enthusiasm as we work together to make this Aspirations Evening a memorable and beneficial experience for our Year 10 students.
