Thank you so much to those of you who joined us for the Friends of Doha College (FDC) coffee morning. It was wonderful to see so many of you there and to see our new parents given such a warm and friendly welcome.
I would like to repeat my thanks to all those who volunteer their time so generously to help the FDC in its endeavours. I spoke at the event on how much value the fundraising efforts of FDC add to our school in helping us to add some extra special features to our education. As a proudly not-for-profit school, this really does frequently make the difference.
For any parents who are keen to get even more involved, the FDC will be holding elections for posts on their committee this coming week on Wednesday, 18th September at 4.00 pm. I would encourage as many of you as possible to get involved if you can spare the time!
Have a wonderful weekend.

Principal

It has been an exciting week in the Primary school as we have welcomed our parents from FS2 to Year 6 into our classrooms. I hope you enjoyed seeing some of the amazing work the children have completed as well as the informal opportunity to meet with the class teachers.
This early opportunity to meet our teachers is so important in building a strong foundation of trust. As a school we highly value the strong and positive relationships that we build with our families. This will continue over the next two weeks as we invite you to meet our HOYs and AHTs for our curriculum presentations (please refer to the communication from Mr Cann in last week’s newsletter).
These curriculum meetings are a fantastic opportunity to meet the team who will lead your child’s year group. It also allows you to find out more about the programme of study for the year group and any special events that have been planned. Please also use this opportunity to ask any questions you may have or to pass on any suggestions.
In our assembly this week, we focused on being kind. This built on last week’s assembly that focused on Excellence and bringing our school motto to life, 'Excellence for all, excellence from all'. In the assembly, we used the story of Captain Sir Tom Moore to inspire the children and to help them realise that small acts of kindness can have a ripple effect. No one in our community is too small to make a difference. In order to highlight this, we have challenged every student in Primary to perform a conscious, small act of kindness over the next two days. They will then record this, with their teachers, and we will bring the acts together to form a display.
I hope that after a busy week in school, you enjoy a restful weekend. I look forward to meeting you at our curriculum meetings over the next two weeks.

Phone Pouch Launch on 22nd September
As we approach the last week before our phone pouch launch at Doha College Secondary School, we kindly remind all families to ensure that pouches are purchased or to let us know if your child will not be bringing a device to school. Pouches will be handed out to students on Sunday, 22nd September, during a special launch day assembly. We appreciate your support in making this important step towards a more focused and distraction-free learning environment.
Launch Day, Sunday, 22nd September
On this special launch day, our students will attend a special year group assembly where they will receive their pouches. These pouches will securely lock their mobile phones and small smart devices such as watches during school hours, helping us ensure a focused and distraction-free learning environment. We kindly ask that you ensure the purchase of the pouch by this date or, alternatively, let us know if your child will not be bringing a mobile or smart device to school. The pouch costs 117 QAR and can be paid via SchoolsBuddy under "Outstanding Fees."
Adjusting to the New Policy
In the lead-up to the implementation, any student found with a device on their person, including in their pockets, will be issued a consequence point on iSams. To help our students adjust to this new policy, from Sunday, 22nd September, any student not following the guidelines will have the device confiscated, receive an after-school detention and a responsible adult must collect the device in person from reception. Starting from Sunday, 3rd November, if students continue to struggle with meeting these expectations, an internal suspension will be issued.
As we’ve communicated before, the introduction of phone pouches is part of our shared commitment to providing a safe and distraction-free learning experience. This initiative is a significant step forward in ensuring that our students can fully focus on their studies, free from the distractions of mobile phones and smart devices.
If you need to communicate with your child urgently during school hours, please contact our Front Office, and we’ll make sure your message is relayed promptly.
For those who have chosen not to bring a mobile device to school, please complete the designated form HERE to confirm this choice.
Lastly, we’ve prepared a parent guide to the phone pouches, which you can access HERE. These questions reflect feedback from our consultations with parents, students, and the Yondr team.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to create an optimal and safe learning environment for our students.

The British curriculum requires an extended programme, PSHE (personal, social, health and economic education) be delivered in schools to aid this goal. While the PSHE programme encourages non-academic education and training, it is a cookie cutter approach and some of the content is not relevant or cannot be applied to international settings.
With this in mind, at Doha College we have set out to develop our own secondary programme, designed by the school to take into account the specific needs of our students – a programme that will better prepare our students for their future. Positive Education (PosEd), based on Positive Psychology, provides an excellent foundation for this. It is a holistic approach that considers the wellbeing of students, parents and teaching staff through the PERMAH model.
This approach combines traditional education principles with research-backed ways of increasing happiness and wellbeing, where shifting one’s perspective (mindset) can lead to improved well-being and quality of life.
Three strands will lead our students to understand themselves and function better within our community and society. These strands are:
1. Metacognition (Self-awareness, i.e., Who am I?)
2. Safeguarding and Wellbeing (Social behaviour, i.e., My Place in Society)
3. Training and Preparation (Future Forward Ready, i.e., My Future)
Has this piqued your interest? There will be a Zoom secondary evening orientation if you would like to know more about the programme. We will also be holding Positive Parenting training sessions this term and invite you to attend. Content will include child development and ‘Understanding the 4Cs’ (care, consistency, choices and consequences).
I wish a positive term and year for all in our community.

The Form Tutor is a key figure in your child’s academic and personal development, serving as a mentor and advocate.
During the event, you’ll gain insights into how we work to ensure each student’s unique needs are met, helping them thrive both academically and socially. For more information, please see the letter below.
Below, you will find two important letters from Mrs Teresa Menton regarding Doha College’s digital expectations. One letter is addressed to parents of Year 7 students, and the other to parents of students in Year 8 through Year 13. It is essential that you review these documents to ensure that you and your children are familiar with our digital practices. This will help to provide a smooth and successful learning experience for your children.
As we begin another exciting year at Doha College, I want to highlight the incredible benefits of your child learning a musical instrument. Beyond the joy of performing music, playing an instrument develops critical skills such as discipline, concentration, and creativity. It improves cognitive abilities, enhances academic performance, boosts self-esteem, and offers a wonderful way for your child to express themselves.
I am excited to announce that we now have openings for beginner guitar, woodwind, brass and piano lessons for students in Year 3 and above in Primary, as well as all year groups in Secondary.
Due to high demand, I recommend registering your interest as soon as possible to avoid being placed on our waiting list. New students will begin with a free trial lesson to assess their suitability for the chosen instrument and if needed, an alternative instrument
may be offered.
If you are interested in registering your child for music lessons, please do so by contacting the team at musicinfo@dohacollege.com or by logging into our Members Area.
Essential Information You Need to Know
Registration is now open.
Term 1 concludes on Thursday, 12th December.

After registration is confirmed, an invoice will be generated. Your child will receive their free lesson and be allocated a regular slot. Payment for the remainder of the term will be required at that time. A member of our instrumental team will contact you to discuss scheduling. Please note that the Instrumental Department follows a strict "No Pay, No Play" policy.
The final week of Term 1 is reserved for catch-up lessons and is not part of the regular teaching schedule.
