This year, we are launching our new Doha College Learner Profile. This profile exemplifies the key characteristics and attitudes we aim to instill within our pupils. As we progress through the term, we will be launching a new aspect of the profile in our weekly assemblies with our pupils. This week, we began by looking at the first aspect: Model the power of learning.
To begin our assembly, we explored the question: What makes someone a great learner? Together, we reflected on some of the qualities that help children to thrive: trying their best, working hard, asking questions, listening carefully, never giving up, taking risks, and above all, being happy to learn.
To bring this to life, we shared a story about Felix, our school mascot. In the story, Felix decided to try basketball for the first time. At the beginning, he struggled, he missed shots, dribbled too slowly, and even tripped over his own feet! But Felix didn’t give up. Instead, he kept practising, learning from each mistake, and gradually improving. By the end of the week, he was not only scoring points but also supporting his teammates and enjoying the process.
We also then linked this to a real life example: Michael Jordan. As a teenager, he was not selected for his high school basketball team. Instead of giving in to disappointment, he worked harder, developed his skills, and within a year earned his place. His story is a reminder that setbacks are not failures but opportunities to grow. The children particularly enjoyed identifying his famous Jordan sneakers!
As we begin this academic year, our message to pupils is clear: learning is a journey filled with challenge, practice, resilience, and joy. Together, let us celebrate every step forward and encourage our children to embrace the power of learning.
Wishing you all a successful and fulfilling year ahead.
