University Entrance (UE) is the minimum requirement to go to a New Zealand university. Students must check specific entry criteria for their proposed university and course of study.
To be awarded UE for entry into university in 2024, you will need:
NCEA Level 3.
Three subjects at Level 3 or above made up of 14 credits each, in three approved subjects.
Literacy: 10 credits at Level 2 or above made up of:
- 5 credits in reading
- 5 credits in writing
Literacy credits are available through a range of subject areas.
Numeracy: 10 credits at Level 1 or above made up of:
- Achievement Standards: specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects, or:
- Unit Standards 26623, 26626 and 26627: package of three numeracy unit standards (all three required).
Once you have met the requirements for University Entrance, it will appear on your Record of Achievement.

All NCEA subjects taught at Dio are on the University Entrance Approved Subjects list.
However, the following courses at Dio do not qualify as University Entrance Approved Subjects:
Religious Studies
Transition & Career Pathway Planning
Health
Learning Support
English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
Note: Although EAP is not on the UE approved list of subjects, Level 4 EAP standards do count towards UE Literacy.
