Course description:
Physics is an ongoing human activity, representing collective human efforts toward an understanding of natural laws and testable theories. This results in a greater understanding of, and appreciation for, our physical world. By understanding Physics, students are able to design solutions in response to a wide range of contemporary issues and challenges.
Students will be increasing their depth of using symbols and applying mathematical processes to the physical situations. They will be producing both qualitative and quantitative explanations for a variety of complex situations. Level 3 Physics builds upon the foundation of Level 2 Physics, while introducing additional techniques and skills as students investigate complex phenomena to a greater depth.
Course of study:
This course is designed to extend the knowledge and inquiry skills developed in Level 2 Physics. The Level 3 course includes Motion, Oscillation and Waves, Direct Current Electricity and Capacitors, Electromagnetism, Alternating Current, and Modern Physics.
Assessment:
Internal – up to 3 credits at NCEA Level 3.
External – up to 16 credits at NCEA Level 3.
Costs:
Study guide: $38 (optional)
Workbook: $37
Entry criteria:
It is recommended that a student has achieved at least an Achievement pass in Level 2 Waves, Level 2 Mechanics and Level 2 Electricity and Electromagnetism. The course requires a good level of mathematical ability and the student should also be studying a Mathematics course at NCEA Level 3.
Future pathways:
This course is on the list of university approved subjects. It may offer up to 19 Level 3 NCEA credits.
