Course description:
Through this music course you will analyse music, reflect on performances, reflect on and perform compositions and musical works, rehearse and perform music from a range of musical styles, explore music through live and recorded performances, and plan and present music as both a soloist and a member of a group.
Course of study:
Sound Arts covers a large number of music skills. You can expect to participate in activities involving performance, aural skills, theory skills, creating/composing, music knowledge and history. As a follow-on from the Year 11 and 2 courses, skills such as music technology and sound recording are continued.
Assessment:
Level 3 Music is divided into two strands: Making Music and Music Studies.
Students have the option of choosing a course (in discussion with their teacher) that best suits their musical interests and strengths. It is recommended that a student's final programme consists of at least 14 credits, made up of no more than 4 internal achievement standards.
Internal credits – up to 42 credits at NCEA Level 3.
External – up to 8 credits at NCEA Level 3.
Two standards have recognised Literacy credits.
Costs:
Equipment: Manuscript paper, clear file folder, 1 1B5 book (or similar), 1 USB, pens, pencils, eraser and ruler.
There will be a cost if the opportunity arises to attend a show or concert.
Entry criteria:
You must play an instrument (voice is an instrument) and be attending weekly lessons for the whole year that you are enrolled in the Level 3 Music course. Performances are graded at the level of a person who has been learning an instrument for at least five years or who is at the Grade 5 ABRSM, Trinity School of music, NZMEB or Rock and Pop exam standard . If you have not been learning your instrument for at least five years but you believe you are at the required level for performance, please see the HOD Music in person to discuss your options. Your entry will be by audition.
Future pathways:
This course is on the list of university approved subjects, offering up to 24 Level 3 NCEA credits.
