Course description:
From the iPod to the internet, from video games to the video shop, our everyday lives are dominated by consuming, using and talking about the media. This course will widen and deepen your understanding of the media and its influence on society. Over the course of the year, you will learn the fundamental concepts that underpin the study of the media. Media Studies leads on to a variety of further qualifications, providing exciting opportunities in one of the fastest growing areas of employment in the world.
Course of study:
As a Level 2 Media Studies student, you will develop a number of transferable skills in the analysis and creation of print, visual and moving image texts. The course will also help you to develop presentation and communication skills that are crucial to success in tertiary education and the world of work. The main areas of study are:
Media Theory
Narrative study
Film genre study
Design a media text (music video)
Produce a media text (music video)
Assessment:
Internal – up to 14 credits at NCEA Level 2.
External – up to 4 credits at NCEA Level 2.

Entry criteria:
At least two Merit grades in the Year 11 Dio end of year English examination.
Future pathways:
This course is not a pre-requisite for any other course at Dio, but you will find it extremely helpful if you wish to study Level 3 Media Studies or media-related tertiary study.
