Course description:
Level 2 Classical Studies explores the people, ideas and events that shaped the ancient Mediterranean world and continue to influence society today. 

We will investigate the dramatic deaths of Mark Antony and Cleopatra as a significant historical event, examining the political, cultural and personal consequences for the Roman world. 

We will explore the art, architecture and daily life of Pompeii and Herculaneum, using archaeological evidence to uncover the lives of ordinary Romans before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. 

Finally, we will read and analyse Homer's The Odyssey, investigating the ideas and values of the classical world and comparing them with Christopher Nolan's 2026 film The Odyssey. 

Throughout the course, we will develop critical thinking, historical inquiry and analytical skills while making meaningful connections between the ancient and modern worlds.

Course of study:

• Investigating the deaths of Mark Antony and Cleopatra as a significant event in the classical world, analysing its causes, consequences and lasting historical significance.

• Exploring the archaeological remains of Pompeii and Herculaneum to examine Roman art, architecture and everyday life before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

• Reading and analysing Homer's The Odyssey, examining the ideas and values of the epic and comparing their representation with Christopher Nolan's 2026 film adaptation The Odyssey.

• Developing skills in analysing literary, visual and archaeological evidence to understand the enduring influence of the classical world on modern society.
