Course description:
Media Studies provides you with the opportunity to gain theoretical and practical understanding of the media and to develop your ability to respond to it critically. It enables you to explore a wide variety of media; film, print, television and digital media technologies. It will extend your analytical skills. Level 3 Media Studies is an excellent spring-board into related tertiary courses and will provide you with a plethora of transferable skills relating to film, communication, advertising, and marketing in particular.
Course of study:
In Level 3 Media Studies, you will have the opportunity to study a range of media texts, concepts and industries. Within each unit there will be an element of choice in relation to texts studies and technology used. The course will focus on the following topics:
Media Theory
Design a media text (documentary)
Produce a media text ( documentary)
Representation issues through media
Apply specific "readings' to film
Media industry study
There is also a Scholarship Media Studies programme available for interested students.
Assessment:
Internal – up to 16 credits at NCEA Level 3.
External – up to 4 credits at NCEA Level 3.
The external standard offered in this course will count towards University Entrance Literacy.

Nil.
Entry criteria:
A minimum of 14 credits in any Level 2 English course.
Future pathways:
This course is on the list of university approved subjects offering up to 20 Level 3 NCEA credits.
