Course description:
Through this music course you will research and analyse music, apply knowledge of expressive features in music, reflect on performances, reflect on and evaluate compositions and musical works, rehearse and perform music from a range of musical styles and explore music through live and recorded performances.
Course of study:
Sound Arts covers a large number of music skills. You can expect to participate in activities involving performance, aural skills, theory skills, creating/composing, music knowledge and history. Other topics covered in Level 2 are sound recording and mixing, and song writing.
Assessment:
Level 2 Music is divided into two strands: Making Music and Music Studies.
Students have the option of choosing a course (in discussion with their teacher) that best suits their musical interests and strengths. It is recommended that the final programme consist of at least 14 credits but no more than 24 credits.
Internal – up to 27 credits at NCEA Level 2.
External – up to 14 credits at NCEA Level 2.
Selected standards have recognised Literacy credits.
Costs:
Equipment: Manuscript paper, clear file folder, 1 1B5 book (or similar), 1 USB, pens, pencils, eraser and ruler.
There will be a cost if the opportunity arises to attend a show or concert.
Entry criteria:
You must play an instrument (voice is an instrument) and be attending weekly lessons for the whole year that you are enrolled in the Level 2 Music course. Performances are graded at the level of a person who has been learning an instrument for at least four years or who is at the Grade 4 NZMEB or Trinity School of Music, or Rock and Pop Exams. If you have not been learning your instrument for at least four years but you believe you are at the required level for performance, please see the HOD Music in person to discuss your options.
Future pathways:
This course is a pre-requisite for the Level 3 NCEA Music course at Dio, but entry can also be at the discretion of the HOD Music.
