Course description:
You'll build on many Level 2 Biology concepts, as well as develop a sophisticated understanding of how science operates and its profound influence on society today. We'll investigate cutting-edge topics, exploring fascinating questions like how humans maintain homeostasis, the revolutionary implications of genetic engineering in various fields, how plants and animals adapt to their surroundings, and the powerful forces of evolution that have shaped the incredible diversity of life and the trends in human evolution.
If you're planning tertiary study in any scientific discipline, including the health sciences, this demanding Level 3 course provides the robust academic preparation you'll need.
Course of study:
The Level 3 Biology course includes studies of the relationships between organisms and their environments, biotechnology, evolutionary processes and human evolution.
Assessment:
Internal – up to 6 credits at NCEA Level 3.
External – up to 13 credits at NCEA Level 3.
Selected students will have the opportunity to be involved in an advanced seminar programme in preparation for the Scholarship examination in Biology.

Entry criteria:
To be successful in this course it is strongly recommended that a student has achieved the following results in the Level 2 Biology course:
At least an Achieved grade in two of the three external standards.
