Course description:
Studying Geography:
stimulates a sense of wonder about our world. We will explore how and why the features on the earth’s surface are arranged and the processes that shape our world.
inspires students to help shape a better future. We will investigate geographic issues, find out what people think, and consider possible solutions.
equips students with skills for the 21st Century. We will use traditional maps, geospatial technologies like Google Earth, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and various forms of satellite imagery to analyse and present geographical data.
Course of study:
Population – why do we live where we do and how many people live there with us?
An Extreme Natural Event – would you ski on an erupting volcano? Would you surf a Tsunami? Could you? Come and find out!
Plate Tectonics – shake, rattle and roll... just why does the earth move?
Maps & Google Earth – to travel is to possess the world.
Research – it’s up to us to find out what is happening in our world and how we as humans matter in terms of our actions with our environment.
Introduction to Geospatial Studies and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, which expands our understanding of real world situations.
Field trip to a local destination.
Assessment:
End of topic tests, assignments and school exams.
Costs:
Workbook: ‘Geography – Apply skills and ideas with direction in a geographic context’ handed out in class and disbursed: $50
Equipment: Coloured pencils, ruler, refill.
Field trip to Shaw's Bird Park approx. $50.00
Note: A laptop is the preferred device and should be pre-loaded with Google Earth.
Entry criteria:
None - but Year 9 & 10 Social Studies is a great start!
Future pathways:
An advantage for Level 2 and Level 3 Geography, and the gateway to an exciting future finding out about what people do, how our environment reacts to our actions, and what we can do to look after this world in which we live!
