Course description:
This course builds on the knowledge and associated concepts developed in Level 1 and Level 2 Geography. In the Level 3 course, students will have the opportunity to study a major cultural process. We will be learning more about the effect the tourism process has on New Zealand and specifically Rotorua.
Course of study:
Cultural environment – demonstrate understanding of how a cultural process shapes geographic environments.
Geography skills – demonstrate understanding of environments through the selection and application of geographic concepts and skills.
A selection of the following topics will be offered:
Analyse a significant contemporary event from a geographic perspective.
Conduct geographic research with consultation.
Analyse aspects of a geographic topic at a global scale.
Use Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to analyse a geographic issue.
Assessment:
Internal – 11 credits at NCEA Level 3.
External – 8 credits at NCEA Level 3.
Level 3 Geography contributes to both Literacy and Numeracy requirements.
Costs:
Overnight field trip to Rotorua: approx. $340
Workbook: $50 (disbursed)
Equipment: Coloured pencils, ruler, A4 ring binder and refill.
Note: A laptop is the preferred device and should be pre-loaded with Google Earth.
Entry criteria:
NCEA Level 2 Geography is recommended.
Successful completion of a Level 2 English and Mathematics course recommended.
Future pathways:
This course is on the list of university approved subjects, offering 19 Level 3 NCEA credits.
