Course description:
The course follows on from the Year 11 course and students will build on skills previously learnt. At this level, students explore how dance reflects cultural, social and theatrical contexts. You are given opportunities to further develop and effectively create your own dance works either in a group or solo format. Performance and choreography are integral to this programme of study.
Assessment:
Internal – up to 14 credits at NCEA Level 2.
External – up to 4 credits at NCEA Level 2.
Costs:
Trips to performances at approx $75
There may be some costs involved for costuming
Entry criteria:
Year 11 Dance is strongly recommended.
If the entry criteria are not met, entry will be at the discretion of the TIC, in consultation with the Dean. Conditions may apply.
Course of study:
The course will include a selection of Achievement Standards and the work covered may include:
Dance techniques – you will use dance techniques specific to cultural and theatrical dance in performance
Elements of dance and choreographic devices – you will choreograph a dance piece based on an issue that affects our world
Perform dances – you will prepare for and perform at least two specific dances in Dance Showcase
Dance knowledge – you will discuss dance elements, techniques, choreographic devices and technologies with regards to a performance by a well-known dance company.
