Course description:
This course provides a progression from Year 10 Food Technology, but with a year-long focus on food product development and the culinary arts. Students will apply technology processes to investigate, plan and develop products to meet the needs or opportunities of a client/stakeholder. Level 1 is an introduction to hospitality and is designed to help students explore their creativity and passion for cuisine.
Course of study:
Implement basic procedures to process a specified product.
Undertake development to make a prototype to address a brief.
Demonstrate understanding of how materials enable technological products to function.
Learning experiences for students will include involvement in restaurant functions, food truck events, creating menus, working in a commercial kitchen, barista work experience, and opportunities to enter regional and national culinary competitions.
Assessment:
Practical aspects and a written portfolio of the student’s evidence of completing the technological process both contribute to the assessment.
Costs:
Practical foods: approx. $70 per term.
Entry criteria:
Year 10 Food Technology is an advantage, but not essential.
Future pathways:
This course is recommended for Level 2 Food Technology. Pathways can lead to careers in food science/nutrition and apprenticeships in the hospitality industry, such as barista, hotel and restaurant management, chef and catering services, and bar management.
