Course description:
This course builds on the knowledge of the natural environment, population and geographic skills gained in the NCEA Level 1 course. The course extends these ideas into earth science, urban geography and geospatial understandings.
Course of study:
Natural Environment – Demonstrate a geographic understanding of a large natural environment.
Geography Skills – Apply concepts and geographic skills to demonstrate an understanding of our physical and cultural environment.
A selection of the following will also be offered:
Conduct geographic research with guidance.
Explain aspects of a contemporary geographic issue.
Explain aspects of a geographic topic at a global scale.
Use Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to explain a geographic issue.
Assessment:
Internal – 11 credits at NCEA Level 2.
External – 8 credits at NCEA Level 2.
Level 2 Geography contributes to both Literacy and Numeracy requirements.
Costs:
Field trip: Overnight trip to the Taupo Volcanic Zone area: approx. $360
Workbook: ‘Geography – Apply skills and ideas with direction in a geographic context’, handed out in class and disbursed: $50
Equipment: Coloured pencils, ruler, refill.
Note: A laptop is the preferred device and should be pre-loaded with Google Earth.
Entry criteria:
NCEA Level 1 Geography is recommended.
Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy.
Future pathways:
A very important advantage for Level 3 Geography and the gateway to an exciting future finding out about natural and cultural processes, how our environment reacts to our actions and the role we play in changing the world in which we live!
