Course description:
In Level 3 Classical Studies we will explore the people, ideas and artistic achievements that have had a lasting impact on the classical world and beyond.
We will investigate Alexander the Great as a significant historical figure, examining both his extraordinary conquests and his ideology of fusion as he sought to unite Macedonian and Persian cultures.
We will explore the enduring influence of democracy, tracing its development from Classical Athens through the Roman Republic to the modern United States.
Finally, we will also examine the artwork of Classical Athens through its vase painting, investigating how Greek mythology was represented and what these works reveal about the beliefs, values and society of the ancient Greeks.
Throughout the course, we will develop our ability to analyse literary, historical and visual evidence while making meaningful connections between the classical world and the present day.
Course of study:
We will investigate Alexander the Great as a significant figure in the classical world, examining his leadership, achievements and the impact of his ideology of fusion on both the Macedonians in his army and the Persian peoples he sought to rule.
We will examine the lasting influence of democracy across time, exploring its development from Classical Athens to the Roman Republic and its continued significance in the modern United States.
We will explore the vase painting of Classical Athens, analysing depictions of Greek mythology to understand the artistic conventions, beliefs and values of the ancient Greek world.
We will develop our ability to interpret literary, historical and visual evidence, evaluating the enduring influence of classical ideas, individuals and artistic traditions on later societies.
Assessment:
Internal – up to 12 credits at NCEA Level 3.
External – up to 10 credits at NCEA Level 3.
Entry criteria:
Open. However, success in Classical Studies, History or English at Level 2 is an advantage.
Costs: EOTC to local pottery studio. Cost is approximately $80
Future pathways:
The course provides an excellent foundation for further study in History, Classics, Law, Politics, Archaeology, Art History, English, Philosophy and Journalism. The ability to analyse evidence, construct well-reasoned arguments and communicate clearly is highly transferable to many future pathways.
University Entrance:
Level 3 Classical Studies is a univerity entrance approved subject. All UE literacy requirements can also be met through the completion of this course.
