This support is available to all students for whom English is a second language and who need English language support to enable them to gain credits for achievement of NCEA qualifications. Students are also supported to achieve Literacy, Numeracy and University Entrance (UE) literacy, which are requirements for an NCEA qualification and entry to a New Zealand university. The overall aim of the support is to enhance students’ abilities to cope independently with the language and literacy demands of their NCEA work, leading to successful academic performance.
The support offered is tailored to the students need, with classes taking place both during the timetabled day and after school, depending on each student's timetable.
Cost: Nil
Entry criteria:
Entry into the classes will be through consultation and agreement between the Teacher of the English Language Support class, the Dean of International Students, parents/caregivers and the student.
Future Pathways:
This class is not a prerequisite for any other course. It is a supported study option and is not on the list of university approved subjects. However, Level 4 EAP standards that may be offered to students do meet University Entrance (UE) literacy requirements.
In Year 9 - 10 the focus will be on preparation for students to attain the CAA assessments in numeracy and literacy, as well as listening and speaking in practical settings. The programme is designed to support students' integration into mainstream classes for NCEA and places emphasis on vocabulary and pronunciation.
In Year 11 students will be offered the opportunity to sit Level 3 EAP assessments in reading and writing (these can currently be used to meet the literacy co-requisite requirements) and Level 2 ESOL assessments in listening, speaking, reading and writing ( each worth 5 credits).
In Year 12 students will be offered the opportunity to sit Level 4 EAP assessments in reading and writing (these can currently be used to meet the U.E literacy requirements) and Level 3 ESOL assessments in listening, speaking, reading and writing, each worth 5 credits (these are graded).
Students in Year 13 will receive language learning support as needed.
