Course description:
The Level 3 course has been designed not only with this year in mind, but where students might go in the future. The course structure allows students to use in-depth analysis to hone skills that could lead into study and employment in any area that utilises communication skills and creative thinking. Students will have the opportunity to explore how drama interprets, records, or challenges social and cultural discourse. They will reflect on and critically evaluate a wide range of works and performances. Level 3 Drama includes the legendary solo performance.
Course of study:
Students of Level 3 Drama can expect to study the following:
History of Theatre - you will learn about multiple influential theatre practitioners and present your learning in a contextual presentation.
Techniques – you will bring a number of drama techniques together to communicate meaning in performance.
Devising – using the elements and conventions of drama, you will devise, script and perform a solo performance.
Performance – you will research, prepare for and carry out an acting role in a significant production.
Theory – you will gain theoretical knowledge as your written work reflects on drama processes and performance. You will also reflect on and analyse theatrical work.
Assessment:
Internal – up to 14 credits at NCEA Level 3.
External – up to 4 credits at NCEA Level 3.

Trips to performances: up to $75
Entry criteria:
Both Year 11 and Level 2 NCEA Drama are strongly recommended.
Future pathways:
This course is on the list of university approved subjects, offering up to 18 Level 3 NCEA credits.
