Course description:
This course is designed for students who excel in English and who enjoy the intellectual challenge of analysing literature in depth. It offers a rigorous, literature-rich programme that fosters deep engagement with complex texts and the critical skills needed for advanced academic study.
Students will explore a broad range of classic and contemporary literature — including poetry, drama, prose fiction, and film — and will complete an in-depth study of a Shakespearean text. The course focuses on examining how authors use language, structure, and literary techniques to shape meaning, explore universal themes, and reflect historical, social, and cultural contexts.
Students will develop and refine their skills in crafting analytical writing, synthesising ideas, and constructing well-supported arguments. They will be encouraged to make insightful connections across texts and contexts, respond with independence and originality, and write with clarity, control, and purpose.
This course includes a combination of internal and external NCEA Level 2 English standards, including those that contribute to University Entrance Literacy. It is excellent preparation for students intending to take NCEA Level 3 Advanced English or pursue literature-rich pathways at senior level.
