Course description:
Through studying Mathematics, you will have an opportunity “to develop your ability to think creatively, critically, strategically and logically.” You will learn how “to structure and to organise, to carry out procedures flexibly and accurately, to process and communicate information and to enjoy intellectual challenge.” (NZC 2007)
This academic course is for you if you have a major interest and passion for Pure Mathematics, Computer Science, the Physical Sciences, Engineering, Economics or any field where mathematical analysis is a valuable tool.
To be successful in this course, you will need to be very fluent in algebra and computational skills. You must be able to think innovatively and be able to use a combination of techniques and concepts to solve complex problems in unfamiliar contexts.
Course of study:
As a Level 3 Mathematics with Calculus student, you will study concepts and skills connected within and across the following topics:
Differentiation.
Integration.
Trigonometry.
Solving with Real and Complex numbers.
Assessment:
Internal – up to 4 credits at NCEA Level 3.
External – up to 17 credits at NCEA Level 3.

Entry criteria:
Entry into this course will be based on your Level 2 Mathematics results. To be successful in this course, you will need a minimum of 16 credits in Level 2 Mathematics, including at least three Merit passes, including Merit passes in Algebra and Calculus. Entry is at the discretion of the HOD Mathematics.
Future pathways:
This course is on the list of university approved subjects, offering up to 21 NCEA Level 3 credits.
Curriculum Update:
The NZ Mathematics Curriculum may be updated at the end of 2025. At this stage, the current course details are correct but will be adjusted to accommodate for the Curriculum Refresh requirements.
