Course description:
Physics is the science of matter and energy and the interaction between the two. In Level 2 Physics we continue the study of moving objects, gravity, electricity and light, and how these apply to modern life. This is done by cultivating the student's understanding of physics concepts through classroom study, in-class activities, hands-on experiments and electronic simulations. The concepts include fields, systems, change, conservation, the atom, waves and force interactions.
All students intending to study Physics at Level 3, or who are considering a career in the physical sciences, should complete this course. In addition, employment growth areas requiring knowledge of the physical sciences include forensic science, biotechnology, sports medicine, physical chemistry, engineering and biophysics.
Course of study:
This course is designed to extend physical skills and knowledge beyond that developed at Level 1. The Level 2 course includes Motion, Force, Energy and Momentum, Light and Waves, Electricity, Electromagnetism and Atomic Physics.
Assessment:
Internal – approx. 3 credits at NCEA Level 2.
External – approx. 16 credits at NCEA Level 2.
Costs:
Study guide: $35 (optional)
Workbook: $37
Entry criteria:
Minimum entry requirements:
Achieved in Year 11 Science exams.
Achieved in Year 11 Mathematics or Advanced Mathematics.
The student must also be studying NCEA Level 2 Mathematics.
Future pathways:
This course is a pre-requisite for the Level 3 Physics course at Dio.
