Course description:
Here at Dio, our journey through History is a grand adventure. We delve into people’s lives and the events and trends that changed their existence and ours forever. We seek to understand how the choices made by those who came before us affect the choices we make today. In this course, you will develop a deeper understanding of how the causes and consequences of past events shape the lives of people and society. We do this by exploring a range of contexts that span continents, eras and cultures.
Course of study:
Colonisation – the effect this global process had on both the indigenous people and the colonisers. We will investigate the changes made by colonists and the effect they had on people living in Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia. Linked to these historical ideas will be opportunities for education outside the classroom, with a Waikato Wars field trip and the Year 11 Tūrangawaewae Marae camp.
Black Civil Rights in the USA – a study into the experience of Blacks as second-class citizens in the ‘land of the free and the home of the brave’. We will examine the use of Black non-violent protest in an effort to gain their basic human rights in the USA (1954-1970) and compare these non-violent protest actions by such famous historical figures as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr with Aotearoa’s own heroes, like Te Puea Hērangi and Te Whiti-o-Rongomai.
There is an option for you to choose your own historical event and explore different people’s perspectives about it - what made them feel, think and act the way they did.
