Course description:
Skills-focused course with support towards UE Literacy
This internal-focused English course is designed to build students’ confidence and capability in reading, writing, and responding to texts. It offers a supportive environment with a structured pace, allowing time to strengthen key literacy skills while working towards NCEA Level 2 achievement.
The programme focuses on interpreting and creating a range of texts, developing academic writing skills, and engaging with relevant and meaningful content. While the emphasis is on internal assessment, students will complete one external standard, and the course includes standards that contribute towards University Entrance Literacy.
This course is ideal for students who benefit from more scaffolded support and consistent opportunities to practise and consolidate their learning. It supports continued growth in English while keeping future study pathways open.
Assessment:
Internal – up to 13 credits at NCEA Level 2.
External – up to 4 credits at NCEA Level 2.
(includes 14 UE Literacy Reading and Writing credits)
Costs: Nil
Stationery: Folder, refill and coloured tab dividers; pens and highlighters.
Entry criteria:
This course is designed for students who require additional support to progress in English and will be selected directly by the Head of English. Numbers are limited, and priority will be given to those who would benefit most from a highly structured and supported programme.
Future pathways:
This course is a prerequisite for Level 3 English at Dio.
Note: At NCEA Level 2 and above, literature studies may include complex or challenging themes that require social and emotional maturity to engage with meaningfully. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Head of English, Stacey Stewart, directly.
