This programme provides a chance to engage in diverse physical activities across different settings. The emphasis is on self-management, leadership, understanding oneself, and society's role in physical activity environments. Participants gain knowledge in anatomy, biomechanics, training principles, sports psychology, and sociology. The course equips students with essential competencies to enhance their personal well-being presently and in the long run. Moreover, it prepares them for upcoming academic and vocational prospects.
Course of study:
In 2026, students of sport and exercise science should expect to cover the following:
Engagement in practical movements while also considering hauora (well-being), te ao Māori (the Māori world), and sociocultural influences. This includes a wide range of activities such as competitive and social sports, individual or team-based physical pursuits, mindfulness practices, and fitness activities. The module encourages students to explore and experience various forms of movement that contribute to both physical and mental well-being.
Understanding hauora while incorporating biophysical factors. Students will cover essential areas such as anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology, psychology, skill acquisition, and nutrition. Students engage in movement sessions, learn about energy systems, and explore various movement sequences. The module aims to deepen comprehension of our bodies' capabilities and how they interact within different physical contexts.
Students will expand their understanding of teamwork and unity within movement contexts. Students explore diverse strategies to foster effective leadership, including interpersonal skills, communication, exploring different leadership styles, promoting respect, and collaborating as a cohesive group or team. The module aims to cultivate an environment where every participant's contribution is valued and enhances the collective experience.
Students will recognise the significance of all forms of physical activity. This focuses on evaluating students' engagement in movement throughout the year and highlighting the value of lifelong participation in various physical activities. It emphasises the importance of embracing a wide range of movement practices and encourages students to develop a lifelong commitment to staying active.
