Course description:
Level 3 Textile & Design explores a student’s ability and skills through their communication of design ideas that visually convey the candidate’s design thinking. Students will undertake projects that allow for critical evaluation that is informed by: ongoing experimentation, functional modelling, stakeholder feedback, trialling in the social and physical environments, and understanding of the issue as it relates to a design in a wider context. The programme is designed around students’ needs and interests and will allow for a variety of skills and experiences. This course relies on students being self-motivated and well-organised, working independently and developing the ability to engage with stakeholders in a mature and meaningful way.
Course of study:
Develop a prototype or conceptual design, considering fitness for purpose in the broadest sense
Implement complex procedures to create an applied design
Implement complex procedures using textile materials to make a specified product
Initiate design ideas through exploration and ideation
Collaborate with design industry stakeholders
Curate/exhibit portfolio and textile outcomes
Opportunities exist to extend students’ design capabilities by entering local and national competitions in garment design and/or construction.
Assessment:
Assessment will be in the form of a portfolio of evidence selected from a range of Technology Achievement Standards. A portfolio is an organised collection of evidence that communicates the candidate’s knowledge and understanding relevant to Textiles & Design.
Internal – up to 16 credits at NCEA Level 3.
External – 4 credits at NCEA Level 3.
Students who are considering entering Scholarship must ensure that their selected issue presents them with a sufficient degree of difficulty to allow them to meet the criteria for this entry. The Scholarship entry requires a written submission.
Costs:
Materials: $40 per term
Entry criteria:
Level 2 Textiles & Design, or Design & Visual Communication, would be an advantage, but is not essential. The Achievement Standards selected can be adapted to suit the experience of the students.
Future pathways:
Level 3 Textile & Design Achievement Standards are accredited under Technology and contribute towards University Entrance. The subject develops creative, technological, and problem-solving skills that are highly transferable across a wide range of career pathways, including engineering, product design, architecture, fashion, manufacturing, and other creative industries. Students build capabilities in innovation, design thinking, materials development, and project management, providing a strong foundation for further tertiary study and future employment opportunities.
